DEFINITION OF INTONATION
Variation of spoken pitch that is not used to
distinguish words but it is used for a range of
functions.
Intonation is about pitch the rising and lowering
your voice.
Considered as music or melody of speech.
Express mood, emotion, or intent of the
message.

RISING AND FALLING
INTONATION
Rising Intonation means the pitch of the
voice rises over time [];
Falling Intonation means that the pitch
falls with time [];
RISING INTONATION
In English, rising intonation often
accompanies questions, or situation where
speakers are unsure.
EXAMPLES OF RISING
INTONATION
Do you think he is fat?
Can you dance?
Do you drink milk?
Is your mother beautiful?
FALLING INTONATION
The pitch jumps, then falls on the last
word.
Used in commands, statements, and wh-
questions.
EXAMPLES OF FALLING
INTONATION
Commands : Go sit down.
Statements : Im six feet tall.
Wh-questions : Whats your name?
