IN 1995 SC ruled that airwaves constitute public property and must be utilized

for advancing public good the first community radio guidelines were issued in
2003-04104 educational institutes were given licenses starting from Anna
university. In 2006 guidelines were revised to include nonprofit organizations
and agriculture centers.
Community radio today
To date MOIB has received 1200 new CR applications
BENIFITS OF CR
1. A viable and trustworthy alternative to mainstream media.
2. A platform to enable participation of communities. Participation can be in
various intensities from lending voice to programme, to becoming decision
makers on all aspects of management.
3. A channel to document and keep language and cultures alive on daily basis.
4. A means to promote values of access to education, economic and social
justice, against gender, race, caste and class based violence and transparency
in governance.
5. priority to minority communities riche urban populations have facilities of high
speed internet etcbetter means of sharing ideas, this lacks in rural areas ,this is
where cr helps.
CR serves geographic communities and communities of interest. They
broadcast content that is local and popular with a target audience. In India it is
regulated by ministry of information and broadcasting.
Amateur radio
AR services are organized by ITU through international telecommunication
regulations .National governments regulate the technical and operational
characteristics of AR
AR is the use of designated radio frequency spectra for the purpose of private
recreation, non commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation,
self training and emergency communication
