ways aligned with the Friday homework packet. When a new unit begins, the home- work will be sent home that day. Students have 5 school days to complete and return the homework. Due date will be written on page 1 of each packet. Also, please return page 2 only. Page 1 may be kept at home for practice. This system prevents home- work being completed prior to instruction. Please consider coming out to Open House Thursday, September 18th. We will hold two open house sessions in our classrooms beginning at 6:15pm. A PTA meeting will be held prior at 5:45pm. Student activities will be offered while parents are in the classroom sessions. More information will be provided next week. Join the PTA! Our school has a great or- ganization that does a lot of awesome pro- grams and events for our school. Please consider getting involved. Remember to send your childs plastic homework folder back to school everyday even if there is no completed homework in it. Teachers use the folder to send home any important notes throughout the week. Please make sure your child brings their reading bag book to school each day and remember to record reading on the 40 book challenge worksheet. If your child is a car rider, please encour- age them to know their carpool number. This will help carpool run faster and smoother. If your child is a bus rider, an authorized person should be at the bus stop waiting or else the bus must bring the child back to school. Please be sure to send a healthy snack with your child each day. Snack donations are greatly appreciated. School pictures will be taken Wednesday, September 10th. More information will be sent home soon.

40 Book Challenge Yates Mill Elementary has an excit- ing reading program this year. It is called the 40 book challenge. The goal is to read 40 books by the end of the school year. Students should read at least 10 books each quarter that include 4 fiction, 4 nonfiction, and 2 free choices. First grade reading expectations are that stu- dents read each night. Your child will have an additional log to record books that have been read after the 10 book challenge has been met. Once the challenge sheet has been completed, sheets should be turned into the classroom teacher. A second challenge sheet will be sent home at the beginning of second quarter, October 28th. Writing a small moment During writers workshop, students work on personal narratives, which are stories about real experiences from their lives. At home, you can talk with your child about special events or other experiences that might make a great story. These include: birthday parties, trips, a visit from grandparents or other family members, etc. This week, we are working on sequencing our stories. Our stories should include a beginning, middle and end in the correct order. Discussing ideas at home will help your child come up with ideas during writing time and help them to remember the order of events in their stories. Wish List
