Copper - Properties and Uses

It has its own typical colour. Used for architectural and

decorative purpose.
Good formability and malleability. Different shapes can
be easily formed.
Very high electrical conductivity. Used in cables, wires
and electrical machines.
Very high thermal conductivity. Used in heat exchangers
and radiators.
Good corrosion resistance against fresh and salt water,
alkaline solutions other than ammonia, and many
organic chemicals. Copper-Nickel alloys are used in
marine applications.

Copper / Pre-heat Requirement
Thermal conductivity of copper is more than 6 7 times
that of steel.

Due to high thermal conductivity of copper, heat moves
away quickly from the weld. Supplemental heat given in
the form of Pre-heat to create adequate molten pool.

Pre-heat temperature depends on copper alloy
composition, welding process and shielding gas.
