Team Phoenix is a brand new team of dedicated and specially trained teachers. We intend to provide an outstanding,
rigorous, and enriching educational experience for your child this year, with a special focus on expanding his or her
mastery of the English language. Listed below are a few things every Team Phoenix family should know.
DISCIPLINE PLAN
Each of your childs core teachers will have the highest expectations when it comes to respect, honesty,
responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. Failure to meet these expectations will incur a three step system:
Step 1: Verbal/non-verbal warning
Step 2: Student will be required to reflect on their misbehavior by filling out a discipline form
Step 3: Removal from class/parents contacted via email or a phone call within 24 hours

REQUIRED READING MATERIAL
La Mesa Junior High is a campus that values literacy and stresses the importance of reading and writing well.
Studies have also consistently shown that the best way to master a language is by reading it as much as possible. To that
end, every student is required to have on their person reading material to use during the 15 minutes of provided reading
time after lunch, or during any free time in class. Students must have their reading material every day. Repeated failure to
bring their reading material will be counted as defiance and a failure of responsibility. Students will keep a log of their
leisure reading in the English class, and will at the end of each quarter be tested on their comprehension using the on-
campus Read n Quiz program. Please periodically ask your child about the book they are reading for SSR!

Every day, a new beginning!

LATE WORK
In every class, when students miss an assignment or exam, they are expected to complete the task and make up
those lost points no matter the reason. Every student has a two week grace period to turn in a missing assignment or make
up a missed exam, after which it will no longer be accepted for points. Students will be trained in how they can regularly
check their grades online. Furthermore, when a parent is signing up for Infinite Campus, they may choose to have an
email automatically sent when a student misses a grade in the gradebook. Please help us in encouraging students to
make up work, not excuses!
SOME HELPFUL MATH HINTS
Recall of basic math facts (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) is an important component to many of the math
problems that we solve in Math 7/Math 8. Reflex Math is a great tool to use to help students practice and master these
math facts. Reflex Math is a web-based program that can be accessed at www.reflexmath.com. Students will be given
account log-in information soon!
Quiz Corrections are a great way to improve your childs quiz/test scores. As a reminder, students must complete quiz
corrections within one week of the quizzes being returned. Please encourage your child to complete quiz corrections, as
they can significantly improve your childs grade.
IF YOURE IN THE GIVING SPIRIT
Heres a list of things that we could always use
scotch tape rolls
hand sanitizer
black expo whiteboard markers
glue sticks
yellow highlighters
gift cards to office supply stores
lined, college ruled, three-hole punched paper
colored pencils/thick markers
fundraiser donations (ask your child about Step-It Up)
HOW TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE
Each teacher maintains a website, which can be found at hartdistrict.org/lamesa. Click on the Teams/Teachers
link to find the teacher site that is desired.
E-mail is the fastest, most reliable, and most convenient way to get in touch with any teacher on campus
Team Phoenix parents will be notified of their childs grades every three weeks, either via an email update
or paper progress report to be signed by the students parents/guardians. If you are out of the loop, ask!
Check your students binder reminder for daily homework, project due dates, tests, and quizzes.

PARENT TIPS:
If your student misses class, remind him to get his makeup work from the teachers, and ask to see it
All students must be dressed appropriately every day to minimize distractions to the learning environment. Please
refer to the dress code in the binder reminder. When in doubt, have them change.
Check the Binder Reminder. The assignment boxes should never be empty. Students write NONE when there is
nothing new assigned. A blank binder reminder is usually a very bad sign.

Cordially and Excitedly Yours,

THE TEACHERS OF TEAM PHOENIX
