Gender Representation
Time:
30 minutes
Curriculum:
Identify and explore ideas and viewpoints about events, issues and characters represented in
texts drawn from different historical, social and cultural contexts.
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to:
- Consider how images in society represent women
- Consider the effect this has on society
- Consider the effect this has on themselves
Resources:
- Laminated image of gender representation with questions on the back
- Butchers paper
- Whiteboard marker
Students Prior Knowledge:
- Students have had experience analysing the representations of social status from
images and texts
- Students have had experience analysing the effect images in the media have on
children
Lesson Procedure:
Lesson Introduction and Motivation:
- Show children a slide show of a number of images that portray gender (both positive
and negative)
- Explain the objectives for the lesson and the procedure
Lesson Content:
- Split students into groups of four and give each group an image with two questions on
the back:
o How does this image portray women in Australian society?
o How does this image make you feel as a male/female student in Australian
society?
- Students will trace the profile of one student and spilt down the middle, one side for
each question
Lesson Conclusion:
- Students will present their profile poster to the class, showing their image and
explaining the answers to the questions
