The United Nations
Complete this assignment to gain background knowledge on the United Nations. To begin, open an Internet browser and
navigate to the United Nations home page at http://www.un.org/en/index.shtml. Then, scroll down to the section
called The U.N. and, and click on CyberSchoolbus. Read the article there and respond to the items below:
1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.
The U.N. emblem means the olive branches of peace.

2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today? 192
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
It involves some of the biggest and richest and smallest and poorest countries in the world, and each has a single
vote.
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
Yes it does because even though they arent binding, they carry the weight for the resolutions for the worlds
governmental opinion.

5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
Its headquarters are in NYC, but its international territory (not owned by the USA). It has its own flag, post office,
and stamps.

6. What are the main goals of the U.N.?

To keep peace within all the countries.
To eliminate poverty and help people live better lives.
Encourage respect for everyones rights and freedom.
To be the center of helping countries aim these goals.

7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.

Countries have to try to settle their problems in a peaceful manner.
The UN is not permitted to in any domestic affairs in any countries.

8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
An organization created after World War one in order to preserve peace between countries to avoid any type of
tragedy like what happened in 1914-1918. The United Nations main goal is to help keep peace throughout the world
and no war, similar to the League of Nations.

9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least two.




10. Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.

One reason it failed was because they had no military power of their own, and it depended on its members
to keep it together.
The United States never joined, and Italy and Japan dropped out of it in the 30s.

11. In what year was the U.N. created? 1944_ What was happening at that time? The second World War.

13. Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United Nations?
Even though the League of Nations failed in the end, its ideas and goals are still the same as the new group, the
United Nations. Its structure still was kept and was outlined in the UN charter.

14. What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it? China, France, the USA, the UK, and the
USSR are involved, and the Security Council is what the league council was transformed into where they are to
ensure peace, and decisions bind all states involved.
15. Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other words, what principle does
it appear to violate? Identify two issues.

The countries power isnt balanced among the other ones.
Many other countries want to join and change/add to the structure, and it is becoming out of hand.

membership grown?
South Sudan is the newest member, The Vatican and Taiwan are still non-members, It has grown because more
colonies are becoming independent, and the Soviet Union is disintegrating.

17. How is the U.N. funded?
The member nations are who contribute to the cost of running the UN.

Security Council

and rotate.
Economic and Social
Council
It spearheads the United Nations economic,
social, cultural and humanitarian activities.
The 54 members involved are chosen by
the General Assembly.
International Court of
Justice (World Court)
It is the main judicial body of the UN and is
tasked with settling disputes that are
submitted by the states.
The 15 judges in the court are selected by
the Security Council and the General
Assembly.
Secretariat

It undertakes the everyday work of the UN,
and puts into place the policies and programs
of the system.
9.000 secretariats come from 170 different
states.
Trusteeship Council

It administers the UNs trust territories. It is made up of five permanent security
council members.
