Grammar, Word-Formation
In modern linguistics many ideas expressed in the preceding stages of its development have
been given new impetus. It is getting obvious that broadening the interests of linguistics
in the modern integrating scientific paradigm does not contradict the understanding of
language as a semiotic system of systems, but sets the goal of relating the knowledge of
the way the linguistic system is structured and of functions of linguistic units 1) with other
kinds of knowledge that of the mental, spiritual, emotional, aesthetic inner world of a
human being as a native speaker of a language, and 2) with a persons cognitive capacities
and ideas about the surrounding world. The linguistic investigations in this direction
have shown that the wide humanitarian knowledge of a human being as a member of an
ethnos are closely interrelated with the system of semantic coordinates and hallmarks
explicitly and implicitly expressed in language, in its grammar and word-formation in
particular. Within this linguistic paradigm of special importance is the investigation
of the historical memory of a language and of the connection between synchrony and
diachrony. This makes us think that the following issues of Russian morphology and
word-formation are of interest and topicality:

xxa derivative word as a unit of extracting, systematizing and keeping

human knowledge about the world;

xxfunctions of word-formation in Modern Russian, including the discourse

function, the adaptive function (as displayed in the sphere of loan-words)

and the game function;
5

&S

STRUCTURES and FUNCTIONS. . Vol. 1, issue 2

xxthe cognitive significance of word-formation families and wordformation categories;

xxthe lacunal character of Russian word-formation system and the filling of

the gaps by potential derivatives;

xxthe connection between word-formation and morphology as a typological

feature of the Russian language;

xxthe universal and the specific properties of grammaticalization in

Russian;

xxthe role of word-formation and morphology in expressing the dominant

and the standard semantic categories of the Russian linguistic worldview;

xxcategorization in the sphere of grammar;

categories and units;

categories;

Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Cognitive Studies

In the second part and especially at the end of the XX century linguists faced a number
of questions which traditional linguistics was not always able to answer. Among
these questions there were both 1) the absolutely new ones which arose because of
the development of civilization and science (the appearance of new technologies, the
achievements of neurosciences etc.) and which were caused by the goals of modern
epoch (the necessity of establishing man machine dialogue, of solving the problems of
machine translation, and the like), and 2) those which had been occupying the scholars
minds since time immemorial (what is language, the connection between language and
thinking, what is linguistic norm, and the like). Scholars keep looking for answers to
many of these questions up to now.
In the present issue of the journal the following problems are suggested for discussion:

&S

STRUCTURES and FUNCTIONS. . Vol. 1, issue 2

xxhow does modern linguistic milieu influence the formation of a childs

speaking and thinking capacities?

xxdo the changes in linguistic milieu affect ones image of the world and in
what way specifically do they do it (if at all)?

xxis there any connection between the appearance of news types of texts
and the changes in speech and in linguistic thinking?

xxhow does the cultural and linguistic polyphony influence the formation of
a linguistic personality

xxfor what reasons do zones of conflict appear in communication?

xxwhat is the structure of linguistic worldview and how does the latter
work?

xxis there such a thing as norm in Modern Russian?

xxwhere does one now find a border-line between literary language and all
kind of -lects?

xxwhat is the present state of the Russian language: catastrophe or

rejuvenation?

The above list contains the main topics of this particular issue of the journal, though
it is not confined to them only and exclusively; however, we strongly recommend
that thematically our authors should keep strictly within the bounds of the linguistic
disciplines mentioned in the title of the issue.

Linguistic Basis for Practical Learning and Teaching Russian Language

Modern linguistic paradigm involves active collaboration between Theoretical and
Applied Russian Linguistics. Applied linguistics, on the one hand, relies on the
achievements of theoretical linguistics and uses its tools (though not mechanically but
creatively, according to its own aims); on the other hand, it constantly poses new tasks
for theoretical studies and outlines possible solutions. One of the fields of such mutual
interest is teaching Russian as a native, as a second native, as a non-native and as a foreign
language to mono-and multicultural audiences at different levels and in different language
environment.The digital, open, dynamically changing world transforms the tasks of the
practical learning and teaching of the Russian language. Its status in the world directly
depends on the efficiency and attractiveness of training. Its time for a serious discussion
of a number of related issues:
the theoretical basis of the practical learning and teaching of the Russian language
tradition and modernity;
xxthe combination of the communicative and of the systemic approaches in
the practical learning and teaching of the Russian language;
xxnew information technologies in the practical study and teaching of the
Russian language the emerging challenges and opportunities;
xxRussian as a native, as a second native, as a foreign and as a non-native
language what do we already know and what do we lack to provide
efficient training;
xxthe antropocentric approach to teaching Russian a new person in the
changing world, does Russian linguistics take into account this particular
aspect;
xxtexts for teaching Russian the linguistic basis of text selection and
working with them;
xxnew phenomena in the Russian language as a subject of practical learning
and teaching;
xxRussian language for non-philologists the content of the course, the
communicative strategies and teaching tactics;
xxthe application of international experience (e.g. EFL, ESL) to the
enhancement of Russian language teaching;
xxRussian language textbooks for different audiences their linguistic and
linguistic-cultural content, linguo-didactic principles;
xxthe linguistic component in teaching various disciplines in Russian and
its use for enhancement of learning;
xxRussian language in multimedia teaching.

The article considers the use of the word (migraine) in non-professional discourse, that is of those who do not belong to the medical community. Based on the analysis of the words semantic and combinatory features it shows the ambivalence of migraines language image in the Russian linguistic consciousness.The research is conducted within a wider task of studying ordinary linguistic consciousness in the sphere of
medicine in comparison with medical terminology as a manifestation of professional linguistic consciousness.

Academician Vinogradovs Keys To Literary Texts

Revzina Olga Grigorievna
..

. - , , - .
. ...
The article considers the three central notions of AcademicianV.V.Vinogradovs theory concerning the language of imaginative writing: symbol, structural and speech categories of literature, the category of the image of the author. Symbol does not exist outside
the text and it is in the text that it acquires its imaginative semantics. The structural and
speech categories are the authors monological word, direct speech, inner monologue and
represented speech. The category of the image of the author is established through the
sum total of the structural characteristics. The article also proves the explanatory force
and the inner potential of V.V.Vinogradovs theory.

Functions of the Verb Forms in Russian Translations of the
Novel A Clockwork Orange by A.Burgess: Dramatic Present
vs. Narrative Past

Urzha Anastasia Victorovna

-
. ( ). - , , (.), (. ),
(.).
.
. (dramatic present) .
The article is focused on semantics and grammar of the three Russian translations of the
novel A Clockwork Orange by A.Burgess. The key opposition of two temporal spheres
(event and narrative) underlying the use of verb forms in the original is interpreted differently in the Russian versions. The potential of Russian tense forms is exposed in the
translation by V.Boshnyak, reflecting the discrepant temporal organization of the novel, and also in the variant by A.Gazov, making the scheme of it a bit simplified, and in
the version offered by E.Sinelshchikov, who systematically eliminates this opposition. In
102

, ,

each case the choice of Russian verb forms is consciously and purposefully made in accordance with the selected version of the novel. The use of dramatic present opposed to
narrative past forms in the original (which is a rare and peculiar device in English prose)
can be compared to the use of Russian present forms in translations. This analysis can
help in distinguishing the dramatic present from historic present as a term.

cinematic close-ups. ( ) In monoaspectual present tense narration, on the other hand, one gets a purely structural account of events,

The Tale of Bygone Years and Formal Texts of the Period

Kachalkin Anatoly Nicolaevich
. XIV.
XXII. ( ),
.
, , - . XIVXV. XXII. , .
Formal texts with marked self-designation and set forms are typical for the established
formal system. This process can be observed in Russia starting from the XIV century.
The Tale of Bygone Years contains a part of formal texts dating from the XXII centuries
(which can not be recognized as documents yet), first of all Russian treaties with Greece.
A significant part of formal texts of the period was not reflected in The tale of Bygone
Years (possibly due to its ideological and patriotic objectives). Regarding the XIVXV
centuries chronicles we report copies of formal texts or retelling of the XXII centuries
events the materials that have not been subject to philological analysis.

Adjectival Indicators of Quantity:
Categories of Emptiness and Fullness
(on the Material of Direct Speech in The Tale of Bygone Years)

Savelyev Victor Sergeevich
. vs. : ,

vs.

. .
The article is devoted to adjectival indicators of quantity used in direct speech in The Tale
of Bygone Years. The first element of the opposition emptiness (or void) vs. fullness is negatively valued as a deviation from the norm, the filling of the void with proper objects reflects the striving for the proper organization of space, and determining factor in establishing quantitative standards is the parameter of measure. The connection between categories the degree of fullness of space and the existence vs. the absence of limits, the size of
spatial and non-spatial object and its evaluation are determined and described, as well
as differences in ways of expression of quantification of non-discrete objects and discrete
sets. Also, the regularities in the use of the adjectives and are defined.
