Applications for AC generator

1. Automotive alternator
An alternator refers to an electric generator that produces alternating current electricity
in motor vehicles. It consists of rotor coils and a stator. An alternator produces the A.C
electricity by spinning the magnetic rotor inside the stator. An alternator on the car is a
very important part of the car. An alternator is like a generator for a vehicle which
charges the battery as the car run. An alternator is an electromechanical device that
converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current.
Most alternators use a rotating magnetic field with a stationary armature
[citation needed]
but
occasionally, a rotating armature is used with a stationary magnetic field or a linear
alternator is used.
In principle, any AC electrical generator can be called an alternator, but usually the term
refers to small rotating machines driven by automotive and other internal combustion
engines. An alternator that uses a permanent magnet for its magnetic field is called a
magneto. Alternators in power stations driven by steam turbines are called turbo!
alternators.

2. Hybrid electric vehicles
Hybrid
electric
vehicles are
powered by
two energy
sources - an
energy
conversion
unit (such as
an internal
combustion
engine or
fuel cell) and an energy storage device (such as batteries or ultracapacitors). The energy
conversion unit can be powered by gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, hydrogen, or
other fuels.
Motors are the workhorses of H! drive systems. "n an H!, an electric traction motor
converts electrical energy from the energy storage unit to mechanical energy that drives
the wheels of the vehicle. #nlike a traditional vehicle, where the engine must $ramp up$
before full tor%ue can be provided, an electric motor provides full tor%ue at low speeds.
This characteristic gives the vehicle e&cellent $off the line$ acceleration.

"mportant characteristics of an H! motor include good drive control and fault
tolerance, as well as low noise and high efficiency. 'ther characteristics include
fle&ibility in relation to voltage fluctuations and acceptable mass production costs. (ront-
running motor technologies for H! applications include permanent magnet, )*
induction, and switched reluctance motors.
