The student is an English-speaking student living in a remote area attending high
school.
Does gender make a difference? The gender of the student does not make a difference. Whether the student is a boy or a girl, the teacher needs to accommodate the student to the best of his or her ability. The teacher should feel obligated to making the student feel comfortable in the classroom whether the student is a boy or a girl.
What cultural knowledge (for you) would be relevant? It would be relevant for me to know a few common words of the students language. For example I should know how to greet the student. Also, it would be beneficial for me to know any common practices from my students culture. This is necessary so I would be able to respect the students cultural practices.
Does the content knowledge need to change? The content knowledge does not need to be changed to accommodate this one student. Since the student now goes to school in this remote area, she needs to learn what the other students in this area are learning. Although the student may not have learned the same content if she went to school in her native country, she is now obligated to learn knowledge from her new school to get her high school diploma from this country.
What are some ideas you have for differentiation? Differentiated instruction is necessary to help this student to learn. Since this student does not speak the native language, it would be beneficial to use a lot of visuals to help the student learn. For example, if I were to make a PowerPoint, it would be helpful to this student if I included pictures that I know the English- speaking student would recognize.
What learning materials would be most effective? The most effective learning materials for this student would be hands on tools such as a ruler or a visual diagram. The most beneficial thing for this student to have is a dictionary and a translator so they student can begin to learn key words in the vocabulary.
Would you need to use different classroom management techniques? It would be necessary to use different classroom management techniques if you know that the student has specific cultural practices. It is also necessary that you make the student feel involved in classroom management so she is able to learn in an environment she feels comfortable in.
What are your learning expectations for the student? I hope that the student challenges herself to learn in this new environment. I hope that she becomes an active learner in the classroom. I also hope to see this student grow in relationships with her peers and work well in partnership with them.
Lesson Plan I will create a vocabulary lesson for this student. For the student to learn the new vocabulary words I would create a PowerPoint with the word in both the students native language and in the language spoken in the English-speaking students classroom. Instead of writing the definition of the word I would show a picture of the word, and then the student could describe the picture in English. This would not help the student to learn the language of the remote area, but it would help her to learn the new vocabulary her classmates are also learning.
