BRIEF MENTION OF THE BROADER UNIT INTO WHICH THIS LESSON FITS, AND WHERE IT FITS INTO
THAT UNIT:
This unit is about persuasive writing.
This lesson fits in at approximately week three. As a class we have already looked at newspaper
articles and there use of persuasive techniques. The final product being assessed within this unit is
small group debates about controversial issues.

PEDAGOGICAL IDEAS:
To create a real experience we have given each table an outline of what type of learners they are,
there motivation level and competency level. A character profile will be given to one student for them
to be the student with specific needs and a Negotiated Education Plan. By doing this it gives an
opportunity to explore different pedagogical strategies and put some into place.

LESSON OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTATIONS:
Objective for the lesson:
Students will understand that persuasive writing conventions will change depending on the target
audience.
Identify and analyse implicit or explicit values, beliefs and assumptions in texts and how these are
influenced by purposes and likely audiences(ACELY1752)

Expectations:
The three main expectations which we agreed upon for our class:
1. Participation. Everyone gets an opportunity to speak and have an opinion.
2. Respect. Everyones ideas, opinion, thoughts and discussion points are taken on board and
not put down.
3. Safety. Everyone has a right to feel safe within this classroom and school environment.

MAIN ACTIVITY:
This activity is differentiated by readiness. Each table of
different learners will be given a task appropriate to their
ability, motivation and prior knowledge.


Explain the activity:
Each table has been given four letters and table to
complete. Your task is to read all four of the letters and
then fill in each section of the table. So as you go through
decide if each letter is formal or informal, what type of
letter it is, who is the intended audience for each letter,
what type of language is used and what it the purpose of
each letter?
YOU MUST also underline or highlight the persuasive
language used in each form of letter!

Each table you may open your envelope and begin the task.
Once the task is complete go through the table as a class.
