Physical Education Term 3 Learning Story

On Tuesday August 26
th
, Mr John Dorge, a former Australian Olympic basketball player
spoke to the Grade Six year level about his illustrious career in basketball as a player, coach
and mentor. In his talk, Mr Dorge touched on the three key themes of grasping
opportunities, setting effective goals and working as a part of a team.

Below are a series of reflective questions.

1. MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPPORTUNITY:

a) Reflect on a time, moment or event in which you took a risk and grabbed an
opportunity.
For into school sports I was in Miss Monteleones B team for netball. At first I
didnt really enjoy netball, I was encouraged by my friends and Miss
Monteleone.
When I heard about the netball championships, I trained with the others,
although I didnt get in I tried my best and gave something new a great go.
In the future Im not always going to get what I want, there will be great
opportunities to take a go and try my best.

b) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there something / an opportunity you are looking forward to trying?
When I was younger I used to struggle with maths. I dont struggle with maths
anymore. At my high school (OLMC Heidelberg) there is a maths helping centre.
After school you go to the centre and teachers will help you out. In high school I
would also like to take opportunities that will help my in the future. I would
like to study more maths subjects. I enjoy the subject maths.

2. SETTING EFFECTIVE GOALS:

c) Have you ever taken the time to set yourself a goal or a series of goals? If so, did
you achieve it / them?
Its my last year of school at Holy Name. In grade 6 you show leadership and be
a great role model to the younger grades. This year I pulled my socks up and
showed how a grade 6 should behave. I achieved this goal because I act the
way a grade 6 should. I need to continue choosing wise places to work.

d) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there a goal or a series of goals you wish to set yourself. If so, what measures
will you take to achieve it / them?
Stephanie is a great student. In high school Im going to be more like Stephanie,
following classroom rules, being kind and treating everybody in the school
fairly. In high school I want to have a good reputation towards the teachers and
classmates.

3. WORKING AS PART OF A TEAM:

e) Reflect on a time, where you worked as a part of a team. Was the team
successful, and if so, how did you positively contribute to the achieved success?
In religion, with Mr Tierney, we had a project. We had to work in a group and
compare The Four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. My group was
Cettina, Anh Thy, Zoe, Olivia. P and I. We all found information on one Gospel. I
think our group worked very well together. We worked as a team and all
worked to the best of our ability.

f) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education,
is there an opportunity you are looking forward to trying in which you will have
to work effectively as a part of a team?
At OLMC Heidelberg there is a swimming team. At OLMC Heidelberg, I want to
participate in the swimming carnivals. At school I have only been able to
participate once. In high school Im sure Ill have more opportunities to
participate in the swimming carnivals. The first swimming carnival I
participated in was very fun but also challenging. I was in a relay with other
girls. We worked as a team because we showed encouragement towards one
another. We were all great sports.
