Mr. Cloyd

Potential employer and college admissions officers look to social media sites such as
Facebook and MySpace to gather further information on workers and students. They want to be
sure that who they are considering are truly best for that particular spot. Many people debate if
this should be allowed. People also debate if this will keep employees and commissioners from
being unequal.
Some say that checking social media sites is crucial for the selecting process. According
to Source A, Harvard received 27,462 applications last year. They need to know if the students
they are accepting are truly right to be accepted. When they look on social media sites, they look
for Red Flags that people post. Flags like self incriminating information or lack of common
sense. (Source A) Harvard is not the only college that does this though. Source A tells u that
10 admissions counselors at the countys top 500 colleges use social media networking sites.
Source A also tell us about a Kaplan report. Social networking sites had a positive impact 25%
of the time while 38% had a negative effect.
Some say that colleges and employers shouldn't look at social media networks with the
application process. According to Source C, I think one of the mistakes a lot of universities
make is not having a clear mission for what theyre trying to do with social media, says Daniel
Grayson. Many students and employees may believe that colleges and employers are misusing
social media when it comes to accepting their applications. Greyson is saying that colleges and
employers need to give a clear understanding of what they are looking for in social networks and
why. People will begin to trust them more if they do this.
In Source D, 34,000 high school seniors who registered for the SAT were asked if they
were concerned about possible uses of private information on social networking sites. They
were asked four questions most of the seniors answered that they were not concerned; about
166% of the 400% from the four questions. About 121% of the 400% from the four questions
were somewhat concerned. The majority of them were mostly concerned with their information
being used so advertisers could pitch products to them base on their interests. About 93% of the
400% from the four questions were extremely concerned. They were mostly concerned that
colleges would use things about them to affect the chances of admission. In general, most young
adults dont care if their media sites are used, but there is still a handful that are.
According to Source E, this is not just an issue here at home. Officials in Germany are
also looking to social media to help with the accepting process. Officials in Germany are trying
to pass a law that allows other to use social media to help with the application process. As o Oct.
27, 2010, it was still being discussed.
Officials use social media networks to help selecting the right people for positions. The
world is competitive and only the most correct people should be selected. Officials dont want
someone who is not fit for the position to be selected.
