Aim: How do we

understand Global History?


CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.9-10.4 Determine the meaning of
words and phrases as they are used in a text,
including figurative, connotative, and technical
meanings; analyze the
cumulative impact of specific word choices on
meaning and tone (e.g., how the language
of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper).

Concepts: Help you understand
and therefore relate to people and
events

Themes: Help you see patterns in
how individuals, groups, and
nations have behaved towards
each other both across place and
time.

What is the difference between
themes and concepts?
Historical Concepts
Belief System: Structures individuals
Create to fulfill their religious faith and
beliefs. What is an example of a belief
system?

Change: Basic alternation in things, events
and ideas. What is an example of change?

Choice: The right or power to select from a
range of alternatives. What is an example
of choice?

Culture: Patterns in human behavior that is
passed from generation to generation.
What is an example of culture?

Diversity: Differences in Language,
Gender, Socioeconomics class,
Religion, Traits, etc. Is diversity
important? Why or why not?

Empathy: The ability to understand
the behavior of others because one
can identify a similar response in
themselves How is empathy different
from sympathy?

Identity: Awareness of ones own
values, attitudes, capabilities an both
an individual and a member of a
different group. Why is identity
important?
Historical Themes
Interdependence : Observing how people
rely on other people in interactions and
exchanges that benefit all those involved.
What does this mean? Give an example.

Imperialism: Analyzing the domination by
one country of the political and/or
economic life of another country or region.
What does this mean? Give an example.

Movement of people and goods: Knowing
there has been exchange of people, ideas,
products, technologies, etc. from one
region or civilization to another throughout
history. What does this mean?

Nationalism: Identifying the feeling of devotion and
pride in ones country, or desire of people to govern
themselves. Why do people wish to govern
themselves?

Urbanization: Observing the movement of people
from rural to urban areas. What does urban mean?
Rural? Why do people move from rural to urban
areas?
