goals.

When my swimming coach first talked to me about the idea of setting goals, I wasnt
very keen. It seemed like a lot of extra work! But setting goals has helped to give me
direction, keep me motivated and achieve successes.

I set different types of goals. First are dream goals. When I began swimming training,
my major dream goal was to be an Olympic medalist in five years time. Next are long-
term goals. These help me to work towards my dream goals. One of my past long-term
goals was to win the next national championships in breaststroke. Finally, there are
short-term goals. These should help you to achieve your long-term goals. One of my
short-term goals was to achieve a personal best time in a training session. All goals
should be specific, realistic and have a time frame otherwise, it is easy to lose
interest.

It is also important to write your goals and place them somewhere you will see them. I
stick mine to the bathroom mirror. I also make training and competition logs to help me
stick to my goals. At the top of each page, I write my short-term goal for each session
or competition. Then I list anything which might stop me from meeting my goal, as well
as what I need to do to achieve the goal. After the session or competition, I write what
happened. Both logs really help me stay focused and able to see my improvements.

I also constantly evaluate my goals. Sometimes, a goal may not be realistic any more; for
example, it I get injured, and I have to modify it. This does not mean I am a failure!
The process of striving to reach a goal helps me to grow in knowledge and strength.

Finally, it is important to note when you achieve a goal and reward yourself. I certainly
did when I achieved my dream goal last year I am now an Olympic bronze medalist!
Now I have a new dream goal to win gold.
