Research
What do I need to find out?
What makes Copenhagen a sustainable city?
Where will I look for information?
Mostly on the internet:
wikipedia, Copenhagen official site, Online encyclopaedias etc.
List your sources here and make a brief note for each (primary/secondary, usefulness, OPVL, etc.).
Research Notes
- People rely mostly on bicycles to get around, as it does not pollute, and also has on of the most
efficient biking system, often referred to as the bicycle superhighway.
- 40% of the population uses bicycles as their main mode of transportation.
- They have reduced the amount of cars people used, and increased public transportation with good fuel
efficiency.
- 20% of the city relies on wind power, and they plan to make that 50% by 2020
- They plan to add another 100 wind turbines
- This can create a lot more jobs for people, and could help the city economically.
- They plan on making the whole country carbon neutral by 2025
- 15 years ago, the Copenhagens harbour was very polluted, and no one ever thought of swimming in
the harbour, as there were over 100 overflow pipes that fed wastewater into the harbour. Now, they
changed the whole system, with reservoirs, and the overflow pipes only open when there is heavy rain.
- This has helped the city economically, as a lot more people live near the harbour, and the prices for the
flats have increased by 50%-100%.
- only 2% of waste is sent to landfills. The rest is used as heat for people, using the incinerators.
- 60% of waste is recycled, and each item is seperated into their own bin: compost, plastic, metal, glass
etc.
- 30% of the city is heated by biomass, which is the most used source of heat.
- most of the city is cooled by water below 10C, which saves electricity used from air conditioners
