During this presentation you should focus on your ideas about how best to develop work from the

chosen practitioner in relation to the assessment task below. E.g. you should identify any particular
performance opportunities associated with the chosen practitioner. You could frame the phrase If I
was working with the following practitioner this is what I would like to do.
If I was working with Brecht, this is what I would like to do. To get into the real meaning of the
Verfremdungseffekt to get the actors on stage to really distance themselves from the performance
to get their view on whats happening using representational and presentational performance
techniques. This helps with both the actors understanding of the writers feelings and emotion by
trying to change the representational and the presentational. Mother Courage works with this as
they use placards before each scene was acted so the audience knew what was about to happen,
which would spoil any kind of surprise or unusual ending.
Brecht believes wants to present the familiar as unfamiliar; taking situations we see every day and
making them strange, contradictory and bizarre. This happens in all kinds of theatre we just dont
realise it. Arturo Ui is like this a quote from Brecht states "The play is not so much an attack on
Hitler, but rather upon the complacency of the people who were able to resist him, but didn't." This
is taking a situation we see every day a person trying to get to the top and know one standing in
their way whether they think what they are doing is right or wrong.

Another one of Brechts ideas was that of Epic Theatre, a way in which he wants to make the
audience, instead of sitting watching a piece of theatre quite unaware of underlying messages it
should provoke rational self inflection, like in the case of The Resistable Rise of Arturio Ui its not
just some Cauliflower sellers in the Gangster U.S. this of course is a parody on Adolf Hitler rising to
power.
