Objectives
Students will paint lines and fill in shapes with even color using tempera.
Students will identify and create an alternating pattern.

1. Read The Spider Weaver.
2. Like in The Spider Weaver, were going to create our own Kente cloth
design by painting lines and shapes into alternating patterns.
3. Input: Kente.ppt
4. Show completed examples that display various alternating patterns.
5. Check for understanding by discussing what elements of the patterns
repeat in the completed pieces. Have students volunteer or call on them to
give examples.
6. Guided Practice: Show students how to fold their papers in half
(hamburger style) and half again (hamburger style), to create four equal
sections. [leave instructions on projector for students to reference]. Have
students complete this task.
Demonstrate drawing pattern #1 in the first section using five lines and
two shapes. Students follow by designing their own pattern.
Demonstrate drawing pattern #2 in the second section using five different
types of lines and two different types of shapes. (if students used wavy
lines in pattern #1 they should use strait lines in pattern #2, if they used
organic shapes in pattern #1 they should use geometric shapes in pattern
#2)
7. Independent Practice: Instruct students to repeat their pattern # 1 onto
section 3 and pattern #2 onto section 4. Encourage students to reproduce
their designs as exactly as possible.
8. Guided Practice: Explain and show the procedure for painting the
patterns starting with painting black over all pencil lines. After all pencil
lines have been painted over in black students should fill in their shapes

Preparation for Lesson:
-Each students station should have a
water cup, a paintbrush, a paper towel, a
6x18 piece of white paper and a paint
palette with black tempera paint.
-Have a carrier with various colored
tempera paint ready to tote around the
room to fill in students paint palettes.

and lines with solid colors. Show the example of rinsing off the paintbrush
and drying it when changing colors. Then show students how to fill in a
shape with a color.
9. Independent Practice: Allow students to work independently painting in
their Kente cloth patterns. As students paint their black lines walk around
the room filling in the rest of their paint palettes with colors for their
pattern. Each student may choose whatever colors they want but are only
allowed 4 colors total.
10. Closure: As students begin finishing their Kente cloth explain the
procedure for cleanup. Have students place their finished piece on the
drying rack. They should then wipe any paint or water off their area using
their paper towel and throw it away. After they have completed this they
should take their water cup and paintbrush to the sink. The paintbrush
should be washed out and the water cup dumped and refilled. These items
should be taken back to their station in preparation for the next class.

Compliment students on their creative Kente patterns and tell how their
pieces will be displayed when they are dry.
Evaluation Criteria
If a student finishes early:
Allow the student to read one of the
Africa/Kente themed books provided for
the project.
