English Fundamentals Skill: Expanding Opinions

Instructor: Joe Milan Jr.


In speaking, making clear opinions can be difficult. Consider the following
question:

Q: Do you think Yonsei University is the best university in the world?
A: Yes! (she says, nodding)

This answer is too short and doesnt answer the question why? So, in order to make better
answers, use the phrases below to expand your answers both in speaking and writing.

Ex.) I think Yonsei

Ex.) Because Yonsei
University has very
good and handsome
teachers.

Using the above expanding opinion language, discuss the following with the other example.

EX. I think Yonsei Universitys cafeteria tastes great because for example So

1. English should be the only language spoken in Korean Elementary schools.

2. Students should not have homework or exams.

3. Drinking is the best way to spend time with friends.

4. Mandatory uniforms for university students is a good idea.

5. University education should be free.

Expressing opinions is good, but often we express opinions when we disagree, with
the person we are listening to. Consider the following:

A. I think Yonsei Universitys cafeteria tastes great because for example So
B. No! I think the cafeteria doesnt taste great, it is the best cafeteria in the world
because for example so

The problem is that when we interrupt/agree/disagree we must try to be polite. Look at
the following table.

Using the above interrupting/disagreeing language, practice expanding opinions and
interrupting your partner on the following topics

1. When children go to college, they should move out of their parents home.
2. Everyone should study another language.
3. Summer and winter vacations are too long.
4. Parents shouldnt pay for their childrens college.

With a group discuss the following questions about life as a Yonsei University
student.

5. What are the restaurants near campus like?
6. Where is the best place to study?
7. What are some interesting hobbies that CUK students have?
8. What is the most fun you have had as a University student?
9. What is something that has made you angry while studying at CUK?
