Lesson 8: Analysing Maps

Estimated Time:
60 minutes

Lesson Objectives:
View and read written, visual and multimodal learning area texts that: connect
relationships between ideas and concepts VR6 (ii).
Analyse how analytical images e.g. symbols, tables, flowcharts, contribute to
understanding and interpretation of texts VR6 (viii)
Use visual features for impact, including using placement on the page, choice of
colours and analytical images, e.g. figures, tables, diagrams, maps and graphs WC6
(xii)

Learning Experiences:
1. Go to World cup country map website and go through it with the students
2. Ask students why they think a map is important for a reader to understand
information and start a class discussion
3. Go to Asia qualifiers website and discuss Australias qualification process, explain to
students the relationship between Australia and the rest of Asia
4. Hand out blank of Australia, ask students to think about the A-League and mark the
locations of each team on the map (teacher may have to write teams up on board)
5. Go through maps with students discuss the effectiveness of using a map to mark the
location of the teams to assist plain text (write up responses on board in concept
map)

Assessment:
Students will assessed on their maps

Adjustments:
Students having difficulty can placed together and be guided by the teacher or
assistant to create maps together
Extension activity could be to draw their own map and mark different location (their
choices)
