Unit Orientation The educator will introduce the unit of Ned
Kelly through reading the Outlaw Son:
The story of Ned Kelly (Hunt, 2009)
Chapter on Bushrangers and Neds
Australia. Ned Kellys character and story
will then be investigated throughout.

Building knowledge of the
field
The educator will use the chosen texts to
build students background knowledge and
further their learning. Students will be
engaged in a series of literacy lessons that
are backed up by literature and other
historical texts and this allows them to
learn through literacy in a variety of
different activities. The curriculum
supports the units activities through both
English and History for grade 5.

Utilising the non-fiction
focus text
Hunt, P. (2009). Outlaw son: The story of Ned
Kelly. Fitzroy, Vic.: Black Dog Books.

This book provides a foundation for the unit on
Ned Kelly. The book takes readers through the
life of Ned Kelly with some detail into the life of
Australians at the time. The book has been
used to provide students with information that
will allow them to investigate Ned Kelly and
associated topics through Literacy. This book
will be used in conjunction with "The Word
Spy", where by students are using their
knowledge of words and literacy to investigate
stories, poems and other resources regarding
the topic.

Responding to texts Students are involved in a variety of
literacy activities where they are
responding to texts. They will be
presenting a point of view regarding
literary texts, using metalanguage to
describe the effects and ideas of texts.
They are also creating text through diary
entries, songs, poems, news reports, etc.

Exploring texts Students have the opportunity to explore
texts through investigating the use of
words. They will explore how a variety of
texts tell a story and how they portray

different events and people. They will
explore how language and literacy has
changed over time and how some
language is still the same. They will also
look at a variety of text types including,
poetry, folksongs, narrative, informational
etc.

Examining texts including: They will be looking closely at the way
words are used to portray meaning
through text structure, ideas and features.

Text structure and
organisation
Students will be looking at the different
text structures of both narrative (Meet Ned
Kelly) and informational texts (Outlaw
Son). They will also look at the structure of
diary entries and newspaper articles.

developing ideas
Students will also be making decisions
and developing ideas through looking
closely at characters, events and
perspectives. Students will be provided
with a comprehensive range of information
over the activities and they will decide at
the end whether they believe Ned Kelly
was a hero or a villain, to write their news
report. Students will express their ideas on
a range of topics through class
discussions.

Visual and
multimodal features
of texts
Students will look at how illustrations add
meaning to texts and they work together
with text to tell a story. They will also
consider metaphors, similes and idioms
used in the texts and how these make
meaning.

Extending beyond the
focus text including:
Students extend their ideas, perspectives
and viewpoints of the Ned Kelly story to
portray a range of events and concepts.

Creating texts
utilising print and
multimodal texts
They identify, explore and examine texts
to extend their own interpretation of Neds
character and create a News Article.
Students also take the language used in
documents and resources from the past to
adjust into a modern interpretation.
Through closely examining a range of
multimodal texts including songs, poems,
stories and factual information students
can extend their ideas and perspectives
within their news article.

formative assessment for each lesson.
This will be done through the use of the
anecdotal resource questions.

Summative assessment will be done
through the use of writing activities where
students are creating texts. These will be
assessed using a criteria rubric.

Significant demonstration
of learning.
The students will be required to respond to a
variety of different learning experiences
which use the Australian and Queensland
curriculum for required objectives. Overall, at
the end of this unit it is expected that
students can demonstrate their learning
through their abilities to:
identify the events, concepts and
perspectives regarding Ned Kelly's Story
respond to a variety of different texts for a
range of different purposes
recognise a variety of text structures
identify language features and techniques
used in a range of different text types
understand the meanings of learning area
vocabulary and use these in context
investigate how words, language and
images make meaning within texts
use implied and literal comprehension
strategies when responding to texts
plan, draft, edit and publish literary texts
that meet the criteria for grade 5 English
