GLMA & GLA 2013 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric

Part 1
Memo to School Principal
To: Principal, BCMS
From: Media Specialist, BCMS
Subject: Library Media Program Evaluation
We recently performed a self-evaluation on our current library media program at BCMS. The guiding
document for this evaluation was the GLMA & GLA 2013 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Rubric.
This rubric covered five different areas including student achievement and instruction, staffing, facilities
and resources, administrative support, and staff development. Each category included three different
levels of proficiency which were Basic, Proficient, or Exemplary. Of the 19 different self-evaluation
measures, the BCMS Media Center received a rating of Basic in five categories, a rating of Proficient in
ten categories, and a rating of Exemplary in four categories.
An action plan has been developed and is being implemented to move each of the areas identified as
Basic up to the Proficient level. In addition, we are currently identifying ways to move from Proficient to
Exemplary in several areas as well. Please see the attached documentation to review the completed
rubric and our action plans. We are always seeking ways to improve our library media program at BCMS!
Part 2
Areas Identified as Basic & the Action Plan to Move These Areas to Proficient
Category 1 Student and Achievement and Instruction
4. The library media center resources encourage and support reading, viewing, and listening.
Current Basic Status: Bulletin boards and displays of books and reading materials reflect different
aspects of the curriculum, holidays, and community interests to support recreational reading.
Action Plan: The media center has a wide variety of class sets of books. Select one book a month to put
on display for school-wide recreational reading and provide a book talk at the end of the month. Also
provide even more thematic displays that promote recreational reading. Set up a section of the library
with comfortable seating where students may spend time reading for pleasure or using headphones to
listen to digital resources.
6. Student achievement is routinely assessed.
Current Basic Status: The classroom teacher is responsible for assessing student achievement.
Action Plan: Develop more collaboration with teachers on class projects and lessons. The media
specialist will assist in creating evaluation methods such as rubrics, student self-evaluations, and student
presentations. Encourage teachers to take advantage of all that the media specialist has to offer as a
teacher. Provide sample projects and assessments to teachers to show how the media specialist may be
of assistance to them in the development of lesson plans and student assessments.
Category 3 Facilities, Access, and Resources
9. School library media center square footage requirements based on FTE.
Current Basic Status: Based on FTE, the library media center meets minimum square footage
requirements.
Action Plan: Along with the school remodel, request additional space for the media center. Knock down
walls between the media center and adjoining classroom to expand the physical space of the library. Set
up an area for large groups to meet and expand the space between shelving and tables to better
accommodate students with special needs.
13. One of the national educational technology goals states: Effective and engaging software and on-
line resources will be an integral part of every schools curriculum. The GALILEO Virtual Library provides
Georgia students and teachers access to exceptional on-line resources at no cost to the local school
district.
Current Basic Status: Students will be given instruction in accessing GALILEO. The password will be
provided in a timely manner.
Action Plan: Along with the research methods and the APA citation classes that the media specialist
teaches to every ELA class at the beginning of the school year, the media specialist will add a class
specifically on the use of GALILEO. The class will cover how to access GALILEO, how to access
information within GALILEO, and the benefits GALILEO can offer to them as students. The media
specialist will also offer a professional development course to faculty and staff on the use and benefits
of GALILEO.
Category 4 Administrative Support
15. Administrative staff support at both the school and district levels is essential for the development of
a strong library media program.
Current Basic Status: The school principal provides support to the library media program and makes
time to meet with the Library Media Specialist occasionally.
Action Plan: Ask the school principal to encourage teachers on a regular basis through staff meetings, by
e-mail, and by personal contact to take advantage of the school library media center resources and
incorporate these resources into the curriculum whenever possible. The school principal will encourage
teachers often to collaborate with the media specialist regularly. Schedule meetings with the school
superintendent and assistant superintendents twice a year to report on the activities of the media
center and request specific funding for projects for the media center.

Action Plan to Move One Area from Proficient to Exemplary
Category 4 Administrative Support
17. Local Board approved library media policy is current. This policy requires development of procedures
for the school system and for selecting materials locally, handling requests for reconsideration of
materials, considering gifts of instructional resources, using non-school owned materials, and complying
with the copyright law.
Current Proficient Status: A library media policy exists and is implemented consistently. The Library
Media Specialist recommends periodic revisions.
Desired Exemplary Status: A library media policy sets out clear and comprehensive policies and is
reviewed annually with guidance from the library media advisory committee for update consideration
and subsequent local board approval. It is used by the library media staff as a guiding document for the
operation of the library media center.
Action Plan: Review the current library media policy yearly and edit as necessary. Form a district Library
Media Advisory Committee composed of teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, parents, and
community members to perform this review. Take the revised policy to the Board of Education
members for review and approval each year. This policy shall serve as a guiding document for the
operation of each library media center in the school district.
