KOREA NOW-Monthly Update

Month March/April 2012

Submitted by Ji Mi Lee
Subject Social Issues for Young Generation
Highlights

-School Violence: Serious bullying (including beating, verbal
attack, and even raping) among students has caused several
suicidal incidents. The schools are not providing enough supports
or resources for their students whenever these bullying concerns
are raised.

-The researchers have found that Korean teenagers and young
females immune systems are becoming increasingly weak due to
their unhealthy diet for losing weight. The health department has
raised its concern as these women are becoming vulnerable to
tuberculosis due to their weak immune system.

Relevance to UNFPA
&
Comments and
Recommendations

-School violence:
Relevance to UNFPA: promoting equal rights and opportunity
for every human being. The rights of these victims of school
violence should be protected, and UNFPA may be able create a
meaningful connection with Korean students and encourage
donations.
Some Ideas:
-Start with the Ad campaigns with the counseling organizations
to prevent further school violence and help the victims recover.
After making a meaningful connection with these organizations,
UNFPA can actively make connections with the Korean
Department of Education who is deeply concerned with this issue
as well. Once the connection is established, UNFPA may be able
to gain support from the Department of Education.
-Reach out to high school student organizations to help them
understand what UNFPA does and how the students can help
preventing school violence in other areas

-Women Health:
Relevance to UNFPA: Raising awareness about the currently
prevalent women health issue
Some Ideas:
-Running ads on healthy eating habits
- Working with the Department of Health and the Department
of Women Right
