Dr. Lyrene,
We are pleased to inform you and your team that we have completed and enclosed
our design proposal for the irrigation project in Akot, South Sudan as requested. In our
proposal, you will find that we recommend a drip irrigation system for the site. The system
we recommend will irrigate 2 acres of fruit orchard, 1 acre of grain crops, and 1 acre of
vegetables. We understand that this is less than the quantity of irrigated land than you had
originally requested, but it is our belief that this will be better suited for the resources that
are available.
In our design proposal, you will find a system in which in-line drip emitters are
incorporated producing 0.18 gallons per hour of water, each. These are supplied by a 2 acre
reservoir being depleted by a pump producing 68 gallons per minute of water. The reservoir
is supplied by the existing well water at 25 gallons per minute.
It is our wish that you will be satisfied with our design parameters and continue to
choose us for your irrigation design needs. Should you have any questions, please feel free
to reach out to us.
Sincerely,
ASE Irrigation Design Team

Executive Summary
A 12 acre plot in Akot, South Sudan is presently seeking to be developed. 8 acres of
grain, vegetable and fruit crops within the field boundary are desired to be cultivated. The
largest issue to overcome is the relative unavailability of irrigation water in the project area.
After much consideration, our team decided that a drip irrigation system should be designed
using a 2 acre reservoir for water supply.
The reservoir negates the limitations of the small productivity of the well. In our
design, 25 gallons per minute (GPM) will be pumped out of the well for twelve hours a day
into the reservoir. The water in the reservoir will in turn be pumped out at a rate of 68 GPM,
which is more feasible to irrigate with. The reservoir water will supply a drip irrigation
system designed to emit water at 0.18 gallons per hour (GPH) at each emitter. The system
will irrigate a 2 acre fruit orchard, a 1 acre plot of grains, and a 1 acre plot of vegetables.
The system should warrant ease of use and is designed to be added on to in the future.
Introduction
A proposal was brought to our attention for the development of an irrigation system
on a 12 acre farm in a very rural area Akot, South Sudan. The initial plans were to allocate
8 of the 12 acres for crops: 3 acres for an Orchard containing mango and papaya trees, 3
acres for grains such as sorghum, millet, and maize, and 2 acres for vegetables such as
beans, sweet potatoes, and squash. The primary issue in the design of the irrigation system
is the difficulty in obtaining irrigation water. Our only source of water is a lone well that
produces only 25 gallons per minute. There is a substantial amount of precipitation water
during six months of the year, with virtually no precipitation in remaining six months.
During the dry months irrigation is desired, yet only the 25 GPM well is accessible. The lack
of energy for pumping, high price of fuel for power production, and limited financial
resources could also be considered limiting factors.
Design Recommendations
Mapping
As can be seen in the figure below, we incorporated a relatively simple layout for the
design of the irrigation system. Simplicity and symmetry were of great importance. The well
is in the center of the property with piping to the reservoir in the southwest corner. The
reservoir then supplies water to the orchard plot due north, and the grain and vegetable
plots to the east. Each plot, including the reservoir, has room for expansion or for nonirrigated crops to be used for demonstration.

Design Summary
The final design we recommend includes the implementation of a drip irrigation
system. Some assumptions made before the design process were commenced include the
drawdown of the well, the application efficiency of our design, the elevation difference in the
field and worst case emitter based on the total dynamic head (TDH). The design capacity of
AKOT, SOUTH SUDAN IRRIGATION PROJECT - DECEMBER 2013
our reservoir hinges upon the precipitation values that were accessed from world
meteorological organization (WMO) for the nearby city of Malakal, South Sudan. These
values differ from the estimates that were provided. Several

The system is designed to be operated using solar power which entails six solar
panels producing 180 volts of power. The panels will be located in the center of the property
near the well and facing south. They will be directly wired to each pump controller and, in
turn, each pump. We have specified Netafim Typhoon Series 875 0.18 GPH drip tube with
24 emitter spacing for irrigation. The flushing flow of the system is calculated at 26.50 GPM.
The lateral spacing is 6 feet for the Orchard and 4 feet for the grain and vegetable crops.
The water will be supplied from a well using a submersible turbine pump producing 25 GPM
and overcoming 105 feet of Total Dynamic Head (TDH) to a reservoir measuring 2 acres in
size by 58 inches deep.

From the reservoir, water will be pumped out at 68 GPM using a brushless DC
centrifugal surface pump overcoming 49.71 feet of TDH. Water will travel in a 2.5 inch main
and split into 2, 2 inch sub-mains, before splitting again into more sub-mains sized at 1.25
inches. Along the first sub-main, a back-flow prevention valve will be placed on the pipe;
followed by a 120 mesh disk filter and then a pressure regulation valve. Air/vacuum relief
valves will be placed at the end of the 1.25 inch lateral headers for each crop plot. Water
from the headers will be divided amongst 91 laterals for each of the grain and vegetable
plots and between 39 laterals for the orchard plot. The system was originally designed with
100% efficiency.
The crops specified in the design have a maximum evapotranspiration (ET) of 9.9
millimeters daily or 0.39 inches daily for grains and vegetables, along with a 4 gallon per
day ET for Mango trees and 2 for papayas. The system was designed to irrigate to these
depths according to a run time of 2.03 hours for the orchard plot and 10.7 hours for both
the grain and vegetable plots. The water flow for any of the three plots and for the well
water can be shut off using ball valves incorporated into the system design. The irrigation
system is designed to be run daily from November 1 st to April 30th, after beginning to fill the
reservoir with well water on April 15th.
