1. Teacher introduces the focus for the lesson Mapping through the use of ICT
tools and hands on activities
2. Encourages a whole class discussion through asking the following questions
What is a map?
What is a map used for?
When would we use a map to help us locate something?
Where can maps be found around our community?
3. As a whole class activity the students explore a range of different maps that are
used in real life situations. The teacher first models the use of each map then
allows students to explore individually or in pairs. Each student is provided the
change to use and explore the maps at their own pace. This activity is adjusted
to each child with differentiation activities to suit their learning needs. Maps
explored are:
Google Maps displayed on Interactive Whiteboard for students to
explore at their own pace. Teacher models and demonstrates first, the
allows students to play with the ICT tool

The teacher settles the students by transitioning them to sit back onto the floor for
a group discussion on their findings before moving into the next activity.

4. Wonder Walk Exploring the features of the school. The teacher takes the
students on a walk around the school identifying where buildings, playgrounds,
ovals etc are located. This will allow the students to discover the geographical
concept of space and environment.
5. Students- centred activity is completed through the use of a digital camera,
allowing each students to take a turn at taking pictures of the features around
the school. This ICT tool will assist students in understanding space/
environment/ place. Teacher Aides are on the walk with students to assist
teacher and students with use of digital camera.
6. Upon return to the classroom the students discuss their findings as a whole
class. The pictures that were taken on the digital camera are displayed on the
Interactive Whiteboard for transition into the next activity of individual work.
7. Create-A-Map worksheet The teacher provides each students with worksheet
to identify the features of the school that they saw on their Wonder Walk.
8. 3 of the maps are selected by the teacher and displayed on the classroom
Geography Bulletin Board.

Students discuss and reflect on the concepts that they have learnt throughout the
mapping activities.
The teacher allows the students to understand that each map is similar however
used for different purposes. The students are able to locate particular feature on a
map, relating to a familiar place such as their school grounds.
The following questions are asked to the students to conclude the lesson:
What did we learn today?
Is it important to know how to read a map?
How will this help us in our everyday lives?
