Grade Six

October
Newsletter
October brings many exciting
things to Williamsburg, includ-
ing Picture Day, Thanksgiving,
new playground equipment
(tether ball poles), and Book
Character Day. Please be sure
to check your childs planner
each day to ensure that they
are prepared for the many ac-
tivities and assignments that are
coming their way this month.
In Language Arts....
We will be nishing off our
personal narratives and we will
begin to exploring the Expla-
nation genre. Students will
have the opportunity to read
and write legends, fables, and
Super-Hero texts. In literacy
groups, students will rotate
through a variety of centres
that will build their knowledge
of Explanation texts and allow
them the chance to discuss
various aspects of the genre
with their peers and teachers.
As a culminating task, students
will write a text explaining how
they became a Super Hero to
be shared and published in a
Grade Six Super Heroes book.
In Mathematics....
We will continue to work at
adding, subtracting, multiplying
and diving numbers. The stu-
dents will also be be working
with number patterns. Speci-
cally, students will identify
growing and shrinking pat-
terns.
They will work on algebraic
equations and nd answers to
the missing numbers. Students
will also have to solve prob-
lems dealing with Order of
Operation.

In Science...
We will be learning about the
Characteristics and Properties
of Flight. They will be learning
about the history of ight and
looking into the people who
have played a key role in the
advancement of ight. Students
will have an opportunity to dis-
cuss and explore the implica-
tions the advancement in ying
has had on society. There will
be a nal test in Science near
the end of the month. Students
will know well in advance and
will have time to prepare, re-
view and study at home.
In Physical Education....
We will be completing our
unit on Soccer shortly and will
move on to other ball games
this month.
In Social Studies we will con-
tinue to look at Canadas con-
nections to the world. Students
will research different interna-
tional organizations that Can-
ada is a part of.
