Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is a
students understanding of what
they are reading. To build
comprehension skills, it is vital
to stop and reflect upon what you
are reading before, during, and
after the reading is completed. A
student must understand the
reading task, set a purpose,
activate background knowledge,
and constantly check upon their
understanding. This will help
develop strong comprehension
skills within students, excelling
them towards amazing academic
growth and achievement.
Story Banner: Students will read a
story loaded with characters and
descriptive characteristic
vocabulary. They will then fill out
the story banner which includes the
character traits and the story line.
Read Aquarium: Students can pick
from a variety of online
comprehension games within the
read aquarium! Most deal with the
student reading a short story and
answering various line questions.

Fluency is a students ability to
smoothly read through a text,
retaining and understanding
what they read while accurately
pronouncing vocabulary and
sentence structure. Fluency is a
students ability to read words
accurately, recognize words
automatically, properly group
words, and read aloud with ease.
Developing phonemic
awareness, increasing
vocabulary, high frequency
word recognition, and decoding
skills build strong reading
fluency.
Fluency
Partner Reading: Students will pair
up in groups of two. Both students will
be at different reading levels (ex. low
and medium). They will take turns
reading aloud to each other sitting side
by side! They will help each other as
well, helping to strengthen each
others reading fluency skills.
Read Aloud Plays: This online
interactive game has students read
simple plays out loud, making sure to
add expression to their reading!

Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a vital part of every students
learning development. There is a very strong
relationship between a students academic
achievement and their vocabulary
knowledge! Word meaning associates with
strong reading comprehension. When a
student has a strong understanding of the
terms associated with a certain topic, they
will find ease grasping and understanding
the given topic as well. Students must
always be active, personalize, immersed, and
have repeated exposure with vocabulary.

Fly Swatter Vocabulary Game: The teacher will
read aloud a definition of a word, and students will
compete to find the given word on the board and
smack it with a fly swatter! Fun, active, and very
engaging!
High Frequency Word Game: Students can
practive their high frequency vocabulary with this
fun online game in which you fill into the sentence

Phonics
Phonics refers to relating written spelling to
speech sounds! Having strong phonic skills
helps with reading fluency and
comprehension. Being able to match print
with speech is a vital part of students
academic growth and success. Utilizing and
building upon the Alphabetic Code, which is
the relationship between letters of written
language and sounds of spoken language is
vital! Being able to recognize familiar words
with their correlating sound and the ability
to decode new words and sounds is key.

Short Vowel Flip Books: Students place words
under the given vowel flap that contain the short
vowel sound. This will help with vowel
recognition!
Long Vowels Game: Students can participate
in online long vowel recognition games to help
build strong phonetic skills dealing with the
decoding and sounding out of various long

Phonemic Awareness is a
students ability to hear,
identify, and manipulate
individual sounds in spoken
words. It is vital that students
understand that words are made
of speech sounds (phonemes).
Having strong phonemic skills
improves word reading
comprehension, spelling,
identifying sounds, blending
sounds to form words. When
practicing phonemic awareness,
it is helpful to break up and
segment words into separate
sounds.
Syllable Clap: In this game, the
teacher will read aloud various
words such as delicious and
the students will be asked to clap
along with the word.
