Recrystallization and Sublimation of Benzoic acid

1. How does the use of fluted filter paper hasten filtration? Why is it advisable to place a
small piece of wire between the funnel and the mouth of the flask during hot
filtration?
Using fluted filter paper speeds up the filtration process through its increased surfaced area and
by allowing air through its flutes to enter the flask helping alleviate the pressure and creating a
facilitated flow of the solvent.
A small piece of wire is inserted between the funnel and the flask to prevent formation of a seal
and help relieve subsequent pressure build-up caused by the hot filtrate.

2. Enumerate two techniques that can help prevent premature recrystallization. Explain
each one. What is the consequence of premature recrystallization?

a. Heating the solution before filtration will prevent premature recrystallization.
Filtering the solution while it is still hot will allow the solution to be filtered
thoroughly.

b. Keeping the solution very hot so the solute stays dissolved will prevent crystals
from forming on the paper and in the funnel.
Premature recrystallization will have a consequence of lower yield of recrystallized crytals,
thus an error in the computation of percent recovery of the benzoic acid.
