KE Taylor Elementary

Important Information
Individual Project
May choose and experimental or engineering design
project
Present results in logbook, and on science fair board
Will be part of your science class grade and your
science specials grade
When?

Projects will be presented the week of December 3
rd
in
your homeroom science class
Projects will be judged on December 11 and 12
Open House and Awards are December 12
Top Projects will go to Gwinnett County Competition
on February 27, 2015
How do I begin?

Engineering
Design a product or object
to solve a problem.
Create a Design and make
a prototype,
Test the prototype and
make adjustments at
least three time.
These projects involve
more time, but are
rewarding.
What is a better
backpack design?
Which kinds of simple
machines work best in a
roller coaster?
What package protects a
delicate object?
How do you protect an
egg in an egg drop?
Which bridge design is
best?
Still having trouble?
Choose from a book in
the science room
Choose from a suggested
list on science board
Take the interest survey
on Science Buddies.

Now that you have a topic..
Write your question. This must be testable, with data
that can be measured and observed.
Turn to page 3 and 4 in your logbook.
Use pencil and write neatly.
Refer to your planning guide page 3.
NextResearch
Find out some details about your project.
Use the handouts to help you form your research.
Mrs. Davis will guide your process during our session
in the Media Center.
Use the internet, books, encyclopedias to gather your
information.
Find at least 5 vocabulary words that fit your project.

Guiding Questions
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
What do I do with this
information?
You need to write the information as a research paper.
This is like writing an informational piece for writing
class.
Use good grammar, correct spelling, capitalization and
punctuation.
Mrs. Klein will grade your rough draft.
Check your due dates on the colored paper in your
science fair folder.
Youre Ready for the Hypothesis..
This is a two part statement
1. If ___________ 2. Then____________
Give a reason why you predict this from your research
or life experience.
Example: I predict that the thickest diaper will hold
the most liquid because it has more area to absorb the
liquid.
Once you have made a hypothesis..
You are ready to design your experiment.
1. Steps for the procedure
2. Choose your manipulated variable
(what you change)
3. Dependent Variable
(what you measure)
How do you measure?
Mass
Volume
Distance
Time
Area
Making Observations
Keep notes and sketches for what happens in your
logbook. You may use colored pencil to make them
neat.
Example: The diaper was swelling up like a balloon.
Take photos to document your project.
Keeping data
Keep you data in a chart in your logbook.

Steps to the Procedure
Clear, short steps.
Use measurements.
Someone else should be able to repeat this.
It is like a recipe.
Do the Experiment..
Repeat your experiment at least three times.
This is not three variables.
With plants grow 3 different plants with three different
variables.
(That is a total of nine plants).
You need enough data to prove your hypothesis, make a
graph, and average your results.
Remember to Document in your
logbook.
Do your observations and keep measurements as you
go.
Dont wait until the end to do this.
Write so the judge can read this.
You do not have to be perfect, but be neat..!!

Your Board
Where do I get one?
Cost about $5.00
May purchase at Walmart, School Box, Michaels,
Hobby Lobby, Office Depot, Office Max
It can be white, or colored.
Tips for great presentation
Use space well.
Letter neatly.
Do not write on the board.
Glue typed or neatly written paper on a colored paper.
Attach securely to the board.
Keep it straight.
No erasures, or cross-outs.

Remember
