TITLE OF ACTIVITY: Personal/historic coat of Arms GRADE LEVEL: 1

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY: Create a family shield that represents your family heritage and tells something
about your identity.
Have students review the meanings for the different shapes and illustrations on a coat of arms. Have students
apply these aspects into their own coat of arms using Microsoft paint program.
Students will
o Use their families ancestral country of origins flag
o Research their family name and incorporate that into the coat of arms
o Design the shape of the coat of arms representative of whether they are female/male.
o Use colours appropriate for describing of their personal attributes
o Include other elements which they feel describe them
o Include information about their birth order

GENERAL LEARNER OUTCOMES (GLOS): 1.2: Moving Forward with the Past: My Family, My History & My
CommunityStudents will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how changes over time have
affected their families and influenced how their families and communities are today.

SPECIFIC LEARNER OUTCOMES (SLOS): Values and Attitudes Students will: 1.2.1 - appreciate how stories and
events of the past connect their families and communities to the present: recognize how their ancestors
contribute to their sense of identity within their family and communities.

BRIEF RATIONALE FOR COMPUTER INTEGRATION (WHY USE TECHNOLOGY?)
Allows for the students to access and view a wide variety of information at their own rate.
Microsoft paint allows students to create their own coat of arms, with easily editable sections (if
needed)
Allows students to critically analyze various information/aspects regarding their ancestral lands
Allows for them all to have access to the same information at the same time.

SEARCH STRATEGIES EMPLOYED
Used the program of studies to locate the GLO/SLOs
Used Pinterest search to find basic information on coat of arms.
Tried using google image, surfwax, and Gooru and had no luck finding resources.

F.6 - Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the operating skills required in a variety of
technologies.
Specific Outcomes
o 1.1perform basic computer operations, which may vary by environment, including powering
up, inserting disks, moving the cursor, clicking on an icon, using pull-down menus, executing
programs, saving files, retrieving files, printing, ejecting disks and powering down
o 1.2use proper keyboarding techniques for the home row, enter, space bar, tab, backspace,
delete and insertion-point arrow keys
