Course Hours: 90 hours for whole course Credit Value: 1.0
Course Prerequisites: Science, Grade 10, cade!ic.
Course Description:
This course furthers students" understanding of the #rocesses that occur in biological syste!s.
Students will study theory and conduct in$estigations in the areas of biodi$ersity% e$olution%
genetic #rocesses% the structure and function of ani!als% and the anato!y, growth, and function of
#lants. The course focuses on the theoretical as#ects of the to#ics under study, and hel#s students
refine s&ills related to scientific in$estigation.
Units: Based on Ministry Course Proiles
'y the end of this course, students will(
Unit!": #cientiic $n%esti&ation #'ills and Career ()ploration
)e!onstrate scientific in$estigation s&ills (related to both in*uiry and research) in the four
areas of s&ills (initiating and #lanning, #erfor!ing and recording, analysing and inter#reting,
and co!!unicating)%
+dentify and describe careers related to the fields of science under study, and describe the
contributions of scientists, including ,anadians, to those fields.
Unit!B: Di%ersity o *i%in& Thin&s
nalyse the effects of $arious hu!an acti$ities on the di$ersity of li$ing things%
in$estigate, through laboratory and-or field acti$ities or through si!ulations, the #rinci#les

de!onstrate an understanding of the di$ersity of li$ing organis!s in ter!s of the #rinci#les
of ta.ono!y and #hylogeny.
Unit!C: (%olution
nalyse the econo!ic and en$iron!ental ad$antages and disad$antages of an artificial
selection, technology, and e$aluate the i!#act of en$iron!ental changes on natural selection
and endangered s#ecies%
+n$estigate e$olutionary #rocesses, and analyse scientific e$idence that su##orts the theory of
e$olution%
)e!onstrate an understanding of the theory of e$olution, the e$idence that su##orts it, and
so!e of the !echanis!s by which it occurs.
Unit!D: +enetic Process
/$aluate the i!#ortance of so!e recent contributions to our &nowledge of genetic #rocesses,
and analyse social and ethical i!#lications of genetic and geno!ic research%
+n$estigate genetic #rocesses, including those that occur during !eiosis, and analyse data to
sol$e basic genetics #roble!s in$ol$ing !onohybrid and dihybrid crosses%
)e!onstrate an understanding of conce#ts, #rocesses, and technologies related to the
trans!ission of hereditary characteristics.
Unit!(: "nimals: #tructure and ,unction
nalyse the relationshi#s between changing societal needs, technological ad$ances, and our
understanding of internal syste!s of hu!ans%
+n$estigate, through laboratory in*uiry or co!#uter si!ulation, the functional res#onses of the
res#iratory and circulatory syste!s of ani!als, and the relationshi#s between their res#iratory,
circulatory, and digesti$e syste!s%
)e!onstrate an understanding of ani!al anato!y and #hysiology, and describe disorders of
the res#iratory, circulatory, and digesti$e syste!s
Unit!,: Plants: "natomy- +ro.th and ,unction
/$aluate the i!#ortance of sustainable use of #lants to ,anadian society and other cultures%
+n$estigate the structures and functions of #lant tissues, and factors affecting #lant growth%
)e!onstrate an understanding of the di$ersity of $ascular #lants, including their structures,
