Our pre-service teachers have been introduced to skills for observin and recordin
children!s develop"ent of literacy, and in order to practice these teachin skills each
student teacher is re#uired to undertake a case study of a child $ho is strulin $ith
literacy, preferably one of the children fro" the class in $hich they are undertakin their
final professional e%perience& 'our help $ill be needed in selectin a student for a case
study, and you $ill need to decide $hether you $ish the parents(careivers of the children
to be infor"ed and per"ission souht& The child $ill not be identified by na"e so
confidentiality $ill be preserved& The case study is for their private study and $ill not be
published, althouh it $ill be "arked by the university tutor&
The pre-service teacher has a rane of observations to "ake and data to collect, and
should consult $ith you about the "ethods they are plannin to use& )t is based "ainly on
observation and should not i"pact on class ti"e or class learnin activities& *t +niversity
they $ill be uided in the analysis and $ritin up of their studies and, if you $ish, they can
provide you $ith a copy of their finished study& ,opefully the study "ay uide their $ork
$ith the student durin their final professional teachin e%perience&
