History

MSF was officially created on December,

22, 1971. At that time there were 300
volunteers who consisted of doctors,
nurses and other staff. MSFs first
mission was in 1972, when an earthquake
in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua killed
around 20,000 people and destroyed the
city. In 1975 MSF created its first large-
scale medical program. They made it
during a refugee crisis and provided
medical care to the many people looking
for shelter.

Mission/Goals
MSF tries to help people that are
in distress. These include victims
of natural or manmade disasters
and victims of armed conflict.
They do this without
discrimination and respect
peoples race, religion, creed and
political affiliation. Some people
have a lot of trouble trying to get
the medical attention that they
need. MSF tries to stop this from
being a problem by helping
anyone in need.

Funding
MSF asks for funds from donors and
supporters by using the media. This includes
direct mail, email, and telephone. Some of
their supporters raise funds on their behalf. In
2006 MSF had more than three million
individual donors and private funders
worldwide. Around 9% of their funds come
from public institutional agencies.

Doctors Without Borders Helps Central
Africa
Doctors Without Borders really helps out the
Central African Republic that is located in
central Africa a lot. They are there to help
with armed conflict, epidemics, access to
healthcare and with natural disasters. One of
the most recent examples is when a group of
armed forces that called themselves Seleka
took over a bunch of towns and territories.
Everybody just ran and hid and all the health
posts were abandoned, so MSF launched
extra mobile clinics to help the people in
need.
Activities
Since 1991, Canadians have taken on more
than 2,000 field assignments with MSF in
more than 80 countries. MSF tries to save
lives and ease the suffering of people caught
in crises. In many countries MSF is
providing medical care to people caught in
war zones. A lot of people are cut off from
medical care. These people might have been
injured by gunfire, knife or machete wounds,
bombings, beatings or sexual violence. MSF
tries to help anybody in need by providing
people with the medical care that they need.
These include refugees, internally displaced
people, migrants, minorities, the
unemployed, prisoners, people with
HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis, drug users, sex
workers, street children and others. These
people are usually prevented from accessing
good health care because of who they are, but
because of MSF they can get the healthcare
that they need.
