Getting to Know
Your Country
Three Guidelines
! 1. Facts
2. History
3. Context
2. History

Knowing the history of a country allows you to understand

what problems the country has faced and how it may react
to future problems.

You need to know where you have been in order to

know where you are going.

This does not require you to be an expert in your countrys

history, but it does require you to understand the major
events that have occurred.

Example: If you were a representative from Spain, what is

some historical information you would be expected to know?
2. History

How was the country founded and given its name?

What major events have occurred in the country (especially over

the last 100 years)?

Examples: Civil war, revolutions, protests, major wars with other

countries (i.e. World War, Vietnam War, etc.)

What forms of government have there been in the country? How

was the current form of government established?

What are some issues the country is currently facing? (Politically,

economically, socially)

Examples?
