Key questions within ppt

What do we mean by similarity?

What is your thinking on the word
proportional?

How does it relate to similar figures?

How would you write the ratio of the
smaller figure to the larger figure?

Students will be able
to determine
similarity of shapes
using proportional
reasoning
Given 4 pairs of
triangles with angle
and side measure
shown, students use
proportional
reasoning to
determine if shapes
are similar.
Do Now: (5 min) fraction subtraction

Ppt showing mathematical notation
for similar shapes within geometry.
Think pair share
Two dimensional shape review,
corresponding sides, lines, angles.
1, 2, 3, checks throughout.
Students take notes in journal (7)

Students complete mini me project.
Convert measurements recorded
yesterday to new measurements.
Students recreate themselves from
three dimensions to two dimensions
applying scale factor using
proportional reasoning.

2. Can you explain to me the
difference between shrinking
a 2 dimentional measurement
like the length of your arm
vs a 3 dimensional
measurement like the
circumference of your head?
3. How can you compensate for
that in your recreation?

Student finishes the balance of mini
me for 6 week project. Final product
is an output of drawing either paper
or computer generated. Must be
accurate to scale, measurements
noted and all proportional work
shown.

Additional prize goes to the best,
most creative representation of self.

school)

d.o.l. Students view 4 pairs of
triangles and use proportional
reasoning to find for similarity.
Students must show correct
proportional notation.

Video review shadow to determine
height of unknown objects (buildings,
trees, etc) (3)
Teacher circulates throughout the
students asking key questions:

How is what you are recreating
similar to the proportional reasoning
we use with triangles?

Explain how you found the missing
measure in your own words.

Indirect measurement:
1. students estimate and record
the height, in cetimeters of
the object assigned.
2. Students stand beside the
object. (still) while partner
measures and recods their
height and the length of
their shadow, both to the
nearest centimeter.
3. Parters work together to
measure and record the
length of the objects shadow
to the nearest centimeter.
4. Students will make drawing.

1. Estimate and record the
height, in centimeters of the
object.
2. Place a small mirror face up
on the ground some distance
from the object, so that it is
at the same level as the
bottom of the object.
3. Students back away from
mirror until they can see the
top of the object even with
the dot on the mirror.
4. One student stays in position
while the other one measures
distance from dot to student
and then from the ground to
the students eye level.
5. Together they measure and
record the distance fro the
bottom of the object to the
dot on the mirror to the
nearest centimeter.
6. Using proportional reasoning
(triangulating the
measurements) students
calculate the height of the
object. They must show all
work.
