In addition to this variety
there are numerous species
of birds and mammals
endemic to this area.
Robins, sparrows, ducks,
geese, blue herons, the
Kingfisher, gulls, owls, hawks,
and bald eagles may often be
seen in and around the lake.
Various mammals include
small rodents, squirrels,
skunks, raccoons, foxes,
deer, cougar, and black
bears. Beaver and river
otters may occasionally be
seen as well. In the twilight
hours the little brown bat
may be observed hunting for
insects.

Environmental Education: Key Questions for Inquiry
What are the connections between these
questions and your role as an educator?
Environmental studies/ecology:
What are the major biomes, habitats, and ecosystems in the area you want to study?
What ecological processes are occurring (food webs, nutrient cycling, energy, seasonal changes, etc)?
What native and non-native species occur in this area?
What human impacts and/or benefits are evident in this natural environment?
What is the natural and human history (if present) in this area?

Environmental studies/food systems:
What is your level of knowledge about how the foods you eat are produced?
What is the optimal biology and ecology of livestock and poultry that many of our students will
consume?
How is an agricultural space managed for sustainability?
What environmental impact/benefits s should we be aware of with food systems?

Environmental studies/solid waste:
What happens to the waste we produce?
How can we minimize the amount of waste we produce?
What steps can we do to avoid creating waste in the first place?
What are the environmental impacts of waste?

Environmental science/energy systems:
Where does the electricity you use come from?
What are the environmental impacts of its production?
What can we do to conserve energy?
What can we do as energy consumers?
