I have been in the United States of America for almost three years since the year 2012. I
feel so blessed and grateful to have this opportunity to study abroad at the Iowa State University
(ISU) as an Electrical Engineering student. I learnt many useful knowledge while studying at
ISU. ISU has been a great place for an international student to learn about American culture and
language.
ISU has prepared me with enough knowledge of electrical engineering. The electrical
engineering classes introduced provide me in depth knowledge of how to be as successful
electrical engineer. The classes introduced comprise of design and problem solving skills. For
instance, the Introduction to Energy System Distribution class (EE 455) that I took in last
semester taught me many useful knowledge in power system area. I learnt on how to design a
power distribution system by using the CAD software called Windmill. I also learnt on how to
improve the power distribution system to be an economical system.
Many classes offered at ISU require the particular assignment to be done in a group or
team. After taking several classes, I managed to work in group despite of different cultural
background in order to finish assignment. There are also many resources available at ISU that
can help to complete assignment and excel in studies. The professor and teaching assistant are
always available help me clarify a few things in class that I do not understand. The big ISU
library with a comfortable learning environment also made me feel calm when I do a revision for
test and final exam.
ISU also prepared me a research experience through English classes that I took at ISU.
English classes really taught me the skills required to obtain information for research. I learnt the
skills to obtain a reliable sources that help me write a very good research paper. The ISU library

also provide many useful articles and journals in order to write a research paper. The research
skills I learnt help me to prepare for post graduate study in future.
There are also learning activities outside of the classroom at ISU. For instance the career
fair. The career fair is held every long semester which is fall and spring semester. Many
companies come to the career fair to recruit student for internship and full time employment. I
have been to every career fair in the ISU. I managed to talk with several electrical engineering
companies such as Micron. The career fair is the best place to expose student with the industrial
company that related to particular major. I obtained useful knowledge from the career fair such
as the interview experience and the employer expectation for every employee.
After going through almost four years study in electrical engineering, I feel confident to
work after my anticipated graduation in May 2015. I believe my problem solving ability is
improving every year since the year 2012. I managed to complete all the electrical project in any
classes I have taken at the ISU. For example, I managed to create a vending machine system for
the final project of digital logic class (CprE 281) although I had a problem to start the project at
first. This gives me a solid confidence in taking any risks and facing any new problems related to
electrical engineering in future.
If I were to do undergraduate work again, there is nothing that I would change. I feel so
blessed and grateful that I can pursue my undergraduate study at ISU. I will not forget every
moment of my time as a student here. The opportunity to study abroad at ISU really broaden my
mind to think or view things with different perspective. I hope that all the knowledge I learnt at
ISU enable me to be a very successful electrical engineer that can shape a better world for all
human kind.
