Module 1: Signs and Signals Achieved
Describe what each signs mean on the road
Yet to Achieve
1. Learners are assigned to do Lesson 1- Activity 1 and are
required to identify the signs and signals to assess their prior
knowledge.
2. Learners get Lesson 1 - Activity 2 to complete in pairs after
accessing the resources. Activity 2 assesses their knowledge on
additional signs and signals
Identify and group road signs as a compulsory, warning
and information sign.
3. Learners to complete Lesson 1 - Activity 3 as homework to
design, create and group road signs into three sections:
Compulsory, Warning and Informations sign. They are required
to use the appropriate colours and shapes to demonstrate their
understanding.
Demonstrate the importance of signs traffic light signals
on road
4. Learners are divided into groups and required to present
miming role play to demonstrate their understanding of the
importance of signs and signals. While one group is presenting
others are taking note of which sign and signal is being
portrayed and to state consequences of not following that on
road - Lesson 2 -Activity 1
5. Learners are to watch the YouTube video and write in their
blog what they have learnt on what they have learnt in that
video. Lesson 2 - Activity 2
Recognise the commonly used traffic signs and signals on

road that you use on the way to and from school and if there is

Module 2: Know your bike
Identify and describe the safety characteristics of selected
bike components

Module 4: Learning to Ride

1. Learners complete activity 1 by applying theorical knowledge
to series of questions in relation to getting on and off the bike
Demonstrate skills how to get on and off the bike without
help
2.Learners can demonstrate the mount and dismount skills
incorporated to the Turtle Race drills
Understand key points how to balance on the bike and
how to start to pedal
3. Learners complete activity 2 by applying theoritical knowledge
into discussion about balancing and beginning to pedal

4B Steering and Manoeuvering
Understand knowledge about when and how to steer in a
straight line
1. Learners complete activity 1 by finding when steering skills in a
straight line is applied and why it is criticl in cycling

2. Learners can demonstrate skills of steering in a straight line
with confidence through ' Cycling in a straight line' drills
Understand knowledge of manoeuvering a bike to left
and right and key facts when turning and cornering
3. Learners complete activity 2 and 3 by applying knowledge of
manoeuvering a bike including turning and cornering.
Demonstrate basic bicycle manoeuvering skills
4. Learners can demonstrate turning and cornering skills through
'Cycling in a straight line' drills
4C Shoulder Checking and Hand Signals
Understand knowledge about when and how to do the
shoulder chekcing while cycling
1. Learners complete activity1 and 2 by applying knowledge
about shoulder checking into questions and discussion
Demonstrate skills of shoulder chekcing while cycling
2. Learners can demonstrate stay in balance and control when
they look behind while cycling
Understand knowledge of hand signals when turning and
slowing down or stopping
3. Learners complete activity 3 and quiz by knowledge about how
to do the hand signal to turn right or left and when slowing
down or stop
Demonstrate skills of riding a bike with one hand off the
handlebar
4. Learners can demonstrate skills of riding a bike with one hand
off the handlebar, which is a critical skill for hand signals
Module 5: Advanced Riding
5A Intersections and Giving Way
Explain the road rules associated with cycling through and
turning at intersections
1. Learners complete activity 1 by applying theorectical
knowledge to a series of questions about positioning, signalling
and rules at intersection to assess knowledge transfer.
2. Learners can describe the safest pathway or place to ride at
an intersection.
Explain the road rules associated with cycling through and
turning atuncontrolled intersections
2. Learners are assessed on their knowledge of giving way by
completing activity 2.
Demonstrate correct signalling and turning procedures
3. Activity 3 asks learners to demonstrate off bicycle the correct
hand signals, road positions and turning movements for
controlled and uncontrolled intersections
Distinguish between correct and incorrect application of
intersection rules by road users
4. Using observation in Activity 4 the learners ability to
distinguish between correct application of road rules and the
failure to apply rules and actions correctly is assessed. Learners
work in pairs to record and later blog.
Under simulated conditions demonstrate correct signalling
and turning procedures on a bicycle
5. Negoitiating intersections is a practical drill under simulated
conditions in which the learner will apply road rules and signals
to safely negoitate controlled intersections.
6 Giving way is a practical drill under simulated conditions in
which the learner will apply road rules and signals to safely
negotiated give ways and uncontrolled intersections.
5B Hazards
Describe the purpose of hazard signs
1. Activity 1 requires learners to demonstrate applied knowledge
about hazard signs, their purpose and associated actions.
Identify and describe the cause and affect of road
associated hazards
2. Working in small groups for activity 2, learners identify the
cause and affect of hazards and hazard avoidance and share
learnings with the class.
3. Activity 3 is a small group exercise utilising the LTNZ road
safety video to provide learners with the opportunity to
recognise, identify and review hazards in an observational
setting
Under simulated conditions demonstrate techniques to
recognise, avoid or manage hazards
4. Activity 4 is a series of practical drills to faciliate hazard
avoidance and management cycle techniques including:
hazard avoidance in 'doding the rock'
stopping quickly in 'stopping on a coin'
ongoing and repeated practice in the 'super slalom'
5C Defensive Riding
Define what defensive riding is
1. Activity 1 requires learners to interpret defensive riding in the
Code and reflect on what that means for the individual cyclist.
Apply defensive driving techniques to different road
situations
2. In viewing a video on riding in traffic, learners identify good
habits and techniques of defensive riding.
3. Activity 3 is a reflection of the theory of defensive driving, in
which the learner demonstrates and consolidates knowledge of
both learning outcomes
Under simulated conditions demonstrate techniques that
consolidate skills and knowledge of safe riding
4. This drill is a culmination and demonstration of the
techniques, skills and knowledge learned throughout the Bike
Safe Bike Smart program in a practical riding demonstration.
