Religion in Korea
Irreligion- 46.5%
Buddhism- 22.8%
Protestantism- 18.3%
Catholicism- 10.9%
Other religions- 1.7%
A number of religion is practiced in Korea. The three main religion in
Korea are Buddhism, Protestantism and Catholicism. However, almost
half the population are irreligious which means that they do not have
any religion. Other religion in Korea includes Confucianism, Taoism
and Islam.
SHAMANISM- The native
religion

Believe that everything is possessed by spirits
shaman or mudang is believed to be able to connect
with the spirit and heal bad spirit
Although with the introduction of new religions,
Shamanism is still being across Korea

BUDDHISM- The dominant
religion
Brought to Korea during the late 4
th
century from China
Blend in with Shamanism to form Korean Buddhism
Teaches that mental discipline can overcome suffering
and achieve enlightment
Monks spend most of their time chanting and meditate
A boy can become a monk at a very young age


CHRISTIANITY- The new
religion
Two main branches - Catholic and Protestant
Brought by missionaries to Korea in 1794 and the 1880
Spread across Korea through the development of
churches, college, hospital and school.
Still growing and is believed to be the main religion in
Korea in the future
CONFUCIANISM- The ancient
religion
Introduced to Korea around the 400 B.C.
Based on the thought of Confucius- a Chinese
scholar which is that people should live
according to the rules of the class they are
born into
Influence the lifestyle, law and many other
aspects of modern Korea
