The Mayflower Compact

In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our
dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland,
King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of
the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first
Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually,
in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves
together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and
Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute,
and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and
Officers, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the
general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and
Obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape-Cod the
eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France,
and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, Anno Domini; 1620.

1. In the red letter section of this document, what do you think they meant by the words
civil Body Politick? Explain.
a. I think it means that the civil body is going to be there own political
party. Meaning they own themselves. I belive this because is like that because it
says all together.
2. Judging from the latter part of the red section, what is their goal and purpose for this
compact? Explain.
a. Bettering the Ordering and preservation and furtherance into the
end. Meaning they wanted to know more about this place they had just founded.
3. The green section speaks to self-government, a very important ideal in American
government. Explain why you think this statement describes self-government and why,
in their situation, they needed it.
a. This is stating that they will do everything from laws to constitution
to protect the colony. In there situation their kings or leader was many of many of
days away and so they needed a leader or a overall group that would agree
together to keep from an anarchy.

4. In the blue section, they are basically agreeing to follow the rules and laws that are
created under this compact. Explain what you think the responsibilities are of people
living who live within the laws of a government. (Hint: think about what government
does for people and what people should do for their government and their fellow
citizens).
a. I think that they would find a way for medical reasons and also for
support of the community. Hunt and guard the community in which they live.
Everyone thought this was the best way for everyone to stay safe and fed and in
good standing health.
