• Normally, in a young male the testes
produce 4–7 milligrams (mg) of
testosterone daily. Testosterone
production decreases rapidly after age 50
(to 20–50% of peak level by age 80).
Testosterone cycles
Studies show five different testosterone cycles in men:
• Rhythmic fluctuations three to four time an hour.
• Daily changes with testosterone higher in the
morning and lower in the afternoon.
• Monthly fluctuations that are rhythmic, but
different for each man.
• Fluctuations of testosterone levels throughout
the year with levels higher in October and lower
in April.
• Decreasing levels of testosterone associated
with male menopause that occurs as men get
older.
• Recent estimates show that approximately 13
million men in the United States have a
testosterone deficiency and men with obesity
problems, hypertension, or diabetic So what
can you do about it?
• Men go through a change very much like
women in their middle years, they like
women, experience complex hormonal
rhythms that
• affect their sexuality,
• mood, and
• temperament.
• But some men don’t experience much of
a crisis
• It has many personal, social, economic
and family implications. It may therefore
be difficult to differentiate these changes
from the symptoms of other conditions that
can create some of the same symptoms.
(reduced or increased energy, irritability,
and other negative moods, black pain,

• Recent research indicates that lowered
levels of the following hormones may
decrease sex drive, increase depression
and weight gain, and contribute to a
general decrease in well being and health:
• Dopamine, Oxytocin, Vasopressin, Growth
hormone, Melatonin, DHEA,
Pregnenolone, Thyroid hormone, and

1.If you are overweight trim the fat, don't just lose
it and find it again next week, discard it.
2.Eat a healthy variety of food, include vegetable
and fish ... remember those tales about Oysters?
3.Take vitamins and minerals or a good
multivitamin.
4.Check out the herbal compounds offered to
increase testosterone production, a popular
category for weight training.
5.Excercise, healthy eating and exercise are
probably the most beneficial things you can do to
get your body working again.

• Despite the lack of scientific evidence,
testosterone therapy is growing in
popularity. Pharmacies filled 2.4 million
testosterone prescriptions in 2004 — more
than twice the number filled in 2000,
according to IMS Health,
Deficiency in testosterone

Potential benefits
• Improve muscle mass and strength
• Increase bone mineral density

Potential risks

breathing during sleep)

or worsen urinary symptoms
• Stimulate growth of prostate cancer that's already present
• Enlarge breasts (gynecomastia)
• Stimulate growth of breast cancer that's already present
• Cause testicle shrinkage (testicular atrophy)
• Limit sperm production (infertility)
• Stimulate excess blood production (polycythemia)
• Cause acne
• But few men experience anything like the
virtually complete shut down of hormone
production that women go through at
menopause. And, in fact, many men
maintain normal testosterone levels into
their 80s
• Of those 30 to 60-year-olds questioned
and asked to list the two most important
factors in their lives, only 3% put sex as
the top priority.
