Hurdle Tasks

THREE
Written reection of one minute solo
The creation of my one minute solo was based on dot point three, promotes the
propaganda of the Cyclists Riding Against Pollution campaign. Initially I looked at the
acronym for Cyclists Riding Against Pollution, and found C-RAP, which gave me the idea
to create a rap for this campaign. I drew inspiration from youtube sketches of cyclists, and
their sometimes aggressive nature when speaking of things passionate to them. I wanted
to make this scene highly comedic, with the intention of my rap character falling in line
with the prescribed convention of caricature.
The process of this involved researching- nding relevant words that rhymed, scripting-
writing the rap, editing- cutting words and syllables and rehearsing.
At the stage in which I performed my 1 minute, I lacked condence as I was doubtful of the
relevance of it towards my nal 7 minutes. I wasnt sure if I was going to keep it, however it
was good to start with because it was relevant to a dot point and created a basis for the
creation of the rest of my solo.

Written reection based on play making techniques you have used
Brainstorming
Brainstorms were my saviour. I do love a good brainstorm and by creating numerous
different ones, I was able to get down ideas and reect upon them later. My opening scene
was purely based upon a brainstorm created from the performance focus. My vignettes
were also initially based on brainstorms of characters who cycle in which were derived
from the stimulus.
Research
I tended to researched everything and anything I could. My google history results would
contain searches from how to act like a hipster to words that rhyme with aerodynamic.
The part that required the most research was probably the vignettes of characters, in
which I drew aspects from the stimulus. I was able to draw knowledge and comic
inspiration from the book So You Think Youre a Cyclist?.
I also conducted a mini interview with my Dad in an attempt to gain rst hand insight from
a cyclist.

Three entries that have recorded the play making techniques you have used
Scripting
I think that scripting was something that I focussed on as I like to be able to clearly map
out what I am going to be doing and in what order. I found that it helped, however it also
hindered my creativity when it came to movement. The rap and musical song where
scripted as the scenes were based on the content of the dialogue. Scripting was important
to me during the playmaking process as I wanted it to cleverly show humor as well as
make evident my research.
Improvisation
Improvisation helped me to get into character, as well as include the convention of
caricature and the dramatic element of rhythm. Improvisation was used extensively in
creating scenes for the second dot point: creates a scene(s) that shows his/her
transformation from a sedentary lifestyle. I tried different ways of delivering this and the
content for this dot point changed, as did my improvisation. Improvising personalities for
the types of people who cycle also allowed for me to play around with different voices and
actions. I used this technique to decide on the way a scene would be delivered. For
example, in the leg shaving scene, I improvised two different ways I could deliver it, one
way in which I narrated the scene and the other where I acted it out.
Editing/ Renement
I used the technique of renement during the nal days in completing my script. By
showing people my solo, I was able to get feedback on what was unclear or needed
improvement. This was very benecial as it allowed for me to either rene and work on a
specic line or scene, or take it out all together. As well as showing other people, I lmed/
recorded myself numerous times, in an attempt to analyse my solo myself. It was
important to check that I was including all the prescribed structure as well as using the
correct performance skills in delivering my solo.

SCRIPT - The Cyclist
AIM: to create contrast between the heavy trafc, angry motorists and the
enthusiastic cyclist. Begin solo strong, sets the pace for the rest of the solo, engage
the audience and interest them.

Cycling to me is a lifestyle choice... When I realised that cars were too mainstream, I
searched all of Melbourne to nd the trendiest bike out there. All my problems were xed
when I found my xed gear bike. No brakes, no worries.
Environmental Friendly:
I mean, our family doesnt like to boast about it... but we pretty much do all we can so save
energy. We dont even own a car. Just this morning I had the baby on the front and 5 year
old on the back as I dropped my wife off at work, it makes for great family bonding time.
And the road trips to the country are a blast!

Last month we even moved house by car.
Yep mate just put the couch on the back... nah a little more to the left...

The trick to riding a bike for fun is that you have to make it look effortless. By wearing tight
tting lycra pants, you are already working too hard..
Sometimes I dont even get on my bike... I just walk with it...

Road racer
Ahh well it was about 2 months after purchasing my rst time trial, and well I was pretty
much at an elite level already... so I thought I might as well act the part.
The rst time my wife caught me doing it, I was ashamed... and she, well she was just
confused!
As I stood there in the bathroom in shock, razor in hand, and my left leg on the way to
being hairless; all I could say was...
M: bi...cycle
F: BISEXUAL? god forbid my husbands become a bisexual...
M: NO BICYLE... Bikes... I cycle now. Theres plenty of straight men that shave their legs,
love, its for the aerodynamics.
So after that misunderstanding was settled, I was well underway in becomings Australias
fasted cyclist.
News presenter:
This just in... The new environment campaign thats sweeping the streets of Melbourne.
Formally known as, Cyclists Riding Against Pollution, however takes another name of C-
RAP. C-RAP, where ECO friendly cyclists challenge motorists to RAP battles on the
streets, in order to convince them of the negative impacts of their cars.
These brutal ECO friendly crazed cyclists stop for no one, so beware of having your
windows wound down in the busy CBD of M....

DP2: Transformation from a sedentary lifestyle:
Cyclist: (Outside on road)
You really shouldnt worry if you havent rode a bike in a while, because believe it or not, I
used to be just like you, lazy, fat and short tempered.... NO OFFENSE.
Let me take you back 5 years...
I was packing on the kilos...
a full time truckie,
sitting all day and I didnt have a care in the world about what I did...
One of the guys I drove trucks with said that a few of the guys were starting up a bike gang
and said I should be apart of it.
So I went out to the shops to get my bike in order to join the gang, and when I returned to
work the next day, I was devastated to nd that in fact the pushbike I had bought was not
the right kind of bike they had in mind for their bike gang...
I stood out like a clean rider on Lance Armstrong's cycling team (use bike pump as
syringe)... Haha sorry cycling...
Joke, what an absolute joke this is... someone could have claried.
But you know what, even though I wasnt apart of their gang, I thought it was about time I
changed gear in my life, literally...
so I got on that bike and I rode... and ever since then Ive been hooked!
I got tter, healthier and my wife actually started to like me again.
ENDING
Cycling has revolutionised our roads.
In the past it was possible to divide society into two orders - the equestrian and the
pedestrian, however, this is no longer possible.
Now we have the motorist and the cyclist.
But if you join me in the cycling revolution we can all see a world full of bikes...
Anyway ill let you fuel devouring, environment killing, motorists have a think about that...
Im off to work to drive some trucks.
