In my classroom I aim to foster growth through fostering relationships, building a safe

environment and teaching with rigor. In my classroom students will be encouraged to make
choices and take risks that will lead them to a more well-rounded educational experience. I will
maintain an environment of safety and respect so that my students will want to come to my class
and feel comfortable speaking in public. By being immersed in theater they will gain an
appreciation for the art and it is my goal that they will leave my class knowing more about the
topic and have a respect for the people who make theater possible.
It is the job of the educator to foster student development while challenging them to
achieve more than they believe they can. The role of the teacher is to be a learning facilitator. In
my classroom I will not only facilitate the learning of my students but the community
surrounding them. I will provide theater outreach programs to the community, to ensure that my
teaching doesnt stop where my classroom door does. I will provide resources to my students,
faculty and the community.
In my classroom I will be a catalyst for change. I will make sure that my students are not
content but rather they are looking for ways to improve themselves and the world around them. I
will make sure that the rigor in my classroom is one that promotes active and engaged learning
while creating excitement for learning. I will promote higher order thinking skills from Blooms
Taxonomy to support the rigor in my classroom. My students will be asked to evaluate and
analyze themselves, their characters and the people around them every day. To support rigor in
the classroom I will incorporate Webbs Depth of Knowledge, to help my students reach
extending thinking. By teaching my students with these methods they will be able to analyze
situations outside of the classroom and become lifelong learners. I will make sure that I do my
best to contribute to my students through Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, I will ensure that my
students gain the tools they need to reach self-actualization. Students learn best when all of these
components are incorporated in the classroom, include a hands-on minds on approach to
activities. These are just some of the methods I will use in my classroom.
Learning goes hand in hand with assessment. Assessment will be both formative and
summative in my classroom. I will involve my students in the assessment process by letting them
contribute to the rubric, giving them self-evaluation assignments and having them self-check
their learning. In a high school classroom I will be instructing students, who are in Piagets
Formal Operational Stage, and they will be able to achieve metacognition, therefore they will be
able to evaluate their learning and steps they need to take to improve. By doing this the students
will learn how to set goals for themselves and judge their studying habits and whether or not they
are working. I believe in John Deweys theory of Pragmatism and I will incorporate it in my
classroom by the use of technology. I believe by the use of hands on activities and meeting
students where they are, there will be a more engaged learning environment.
A teacher should always be learning alongside their students, I will make sure that the
learning environment in my classroom is a circular one, we will be learning from each other. I
will play the role of student, teacher, facilitator, mentor, role model, and cheerleader. It is my job
to ensure my students are safe, engaged and are becoming better people. I will make sure that I
do whatever is in my power to make sure each student achieves their goals, whatever they may
be. Whether I contribute to their dreams directly or indirectly I want to make sure that I foster
my students in their journey to being lifelong learners. No matter a students background or
situation I believe that education can help empower them to overcome.
