Reactions become more vigorous as you go down the group
If the metal is a hydroxide, then the hydroxides become more soluble as you go down the group and the solutions are alkaline If the metal is a carbonate then it becomes less soluble as you go down the group, the carbonates undergo thermal decomposition.
Reactions of Group 2 metals: Reacting with water: Metal + water= metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Oxides: The oxides react with water to produce an alkaline solution of the hydroxide: Metal oxide + water = metal hydroxide
