Uniting to Help our Neighbors in Need
One of the organizations that I have en-
joyed being a part of is the Ashe Ministerial
Association. Its not just because my hus-
band Perry and I can go to the same meet-
ing, though that is an added benefit. Its
because I see that there are people of faith
who share a common vision for helping
our neighbors.

Take Paul Woodall, a retired pastor serving
Lansing Presbyterian. Paul has shared a
vision that the churches could unite to
form a ministry with people who need
more than a temporary fix for a long term
problem. Paul and I have been working on
a project that creates a new entity with a
board that would explore ways that we can
better understand our neighbors in need,
connect with the helping agencies to deter-
mine how we can help, assigns families to a
specific church for assistance, and then
provides train-
ing for how we
can work to-
gether. We
hope to have
this program in
place by January
1.

Or take Will Heyward, the pastor at Mount
Jefferson Presbyterian. He and others have
been working for about a year to create an
online directory of helping agencies in Ashe
County that can be accessed by anyone in
need or any agency seeking resources. We
hope to have that ready to access by Janu-
ary 1.

There have also been a variety of different
community leaders who have come to
share ideas about what resources and pro-
grams might benefit people in our area.
The most recent was offering the largest
churches the opportunity to receive a free
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) if
we can find 30 people willing to be trained
to use the devise in the event of a cardiac
event. Our church has been selected to
receive one of these devices, so please read
the article about this our newsletter and
sign up for the training if you are interest-
ed.

Another community-wide effort is the meal
packaging event with Stop Hunger Now at
West Jefferson United Methodist Church
on November 1, 9:00-11:00. Our youth
are going to partici-
pate in this event,
but others are wel-
come as well.

The Ministerial As-
sociation is made
up of several de-
nominations,
Protestants and Catholics, laity and clergy.
Our chairperson is Perry Miller and each
time we meet we have a meaningful scrip-
ture-based devotional and plan new ways
that we can assist our community.

I know that Christmas is several holidays
away but it will be here very soon!
.
A few years ago we collected coins (Change
for a Child at Christmas) to help sponsor addi-
tional children as a church. This year we will
again do the Change for a Child at Christmas
collection. We hope that many of you will still
sponsor a child or two or more by taking a red
card (which will be available in November).
However, by many people contributing even
just a small amount of money through our
spare change we can collectively sponsor an-
other 15-25 (or even more) children as a church
family.

If $3 in change a week were added to 100
cups for 6 weeks that
would add up to $1800
and we could sponsor
about 30 children with
just our spare change!

Plastic cups for col-
lecting change are availa-
ble at the church. The turn-in day will be Sun-
day, November 16. Thank you in advance for
helping the children of Ashe County to have a
Christmas present! We many never know what
impact our gifts may make on a childs life!
From working with the project for many years
I have heard about teenagers and adults that
received gifts as children in turn sponsoring
children because of their appreciation of the
gifts they received.

Call Colleen Dixon at 704-575-5126 or 846-
8323 or email colleenjdixon@gmail.com if you
have any questions.

Looking for other ways to help? We need
toys for various ages, gift cards for teenagers
($5 or more at McDon-
alds, Hardees, Parkway
Theater, Sweet Frog, etc),
games, and clothes.

Dear Pastor Karen,

learned a lot already. I hope you are our pastor for a
very long time and I hope I learn much more from my
Bible. I am glad I got it. Claira C.

are $7 each and can be purchased in

The Stories Behind the Windows are bio-
graphical sketches of the men and women in
whose memory windows have been placed in
our church. The lives of these dedicated
Christians cover many years from the ear-
ly 1800s until the 1970s. Each story tells of
devotion to and love for this church, and
those of us who feel the same love can be
thankful for their lives. They helped make
our church what it is today.

JOSEPH COX WORTH

Joseph Cox Worth was born on October 15,
1881 in Creston, North Carolina. He was
the son of Thomas Clarkson Worth and
Ruth Cox Worth, and the grandson of David
and Elizabeth Thomas Worth. He graduated
from the Bridle Creek High School in Vir-
ginia and then attended the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Afterward he
was engaged in farming and the mercantile
and lumber business in Creston until 1913
when he came to Jefferson to accept the po-
sition of Assistant Cashier of the Bank of
Ashe. He continued to work in banking un-
til his death on December 19, 1942. He was
married to Ina Phipps on February 9, 1921.
They built a home on the lot between the
Jefferson Methodist Church and the parson-
age. The location of their home brought
many blessings, as they were privileged to be
neighbors to the many fine parsonage fami-
lies who came and went through the years.
They were the parents of 5 children, Eliza-
beth, Joe, Jennie Clyde, Ina Ruth, and David.

Rev. Garland R. Stafford, a former minister
at Jefferson Methodist Church, wrote of him
not long after his death. If the measure of a
mans life is his devoted service to others,
Mr. Joe, as he was affectionately known,
lived a great and successful life. The young
people of the Sunday School had in him an
inspiring teacher and a sympathetic counse-
lor. His car was always ready to take them to
youth meeting over the county. He guided
the boys in their scout work. For a number
of years, he was secretary and treasurer of his
church and Sunday School. Several terms he
was member of the Jefferson School Board.
He supported the church generously, often
at real personal sacrifice. So earnest was his
desire to be a good neighbor and to be ready
at all times to help anyone in need, that no
door was ever locked at his home. The
neighbors knew they could go in and call
him and he would go for the doctor or help
with the sick, both of which he did often and
gladly. When he died on December 19,
1942one year and three days after his
brothers death scores and scores of his
neighbors and friends came through bitter
cold to bear testimony to the affection they
had for him and the esteem in which they
held him.

Mr. Joe was joined in his loved for the
church and for friends everywhere by his
wife, Ina, and together they left a legacy of
faith, love and devoted service.

We are featuring one person from the
windows each month. We would like to
thank Jennie Clyde Hightower for doc-
umenting the church window history.

THE STORIES BEHIND THE WINDOWS

SANCTUARY STAINED GLASS WINDOW RESTORATION
We have received gifts or
pledges of $34,063..83
through 10/5/14 to assist
with the repair and restoration
of the stained glass windows
in the sanctuary. Thank you
to the donors. If you would
like to make a gift of any size,
you may write a check or give
cash to the church. You can
always make a gift in honor or
memory of someone. Please
indicate that your gift is for
Stained Glass Restoration.
Thank you!

GOOD NEWS

Our pledge total on Commitment Sun-
day was $236,360 to the general fund,
$39,040 to the building fund with writ-
ten-in additional commitments of
$3,700 to the food pantry, $1500 to the
pastor's discretionary fund and $100 to
the church window restoration. The
pledges to the operating fund represent
76.7% of the budget. We express our
gratitude to Joe Thore and the Budget
Subcommittee as well as Gwyn Camp-
bell and the Stewardship Committee for
their faithful work!

An Automatic External Defibrillator
(AED) is a device used to restart a
heart in the event of a cardiac emer-
gency. Mission HeartStart, spon-
sored by Ashe Memorial Hospital,
applied for and received a federal
grant to provide AED devices to
qualified Ashe County churches, fire
departments and other emergency
agencies over the next three years.

In partnership with Ashe Ministerial
Association and Ashe Baptist Asso-
ciation, Mission HeartStart has invit-
ed our church to be one of the first
to receive a free AED and store it at
our church. To qualify, we must
have at least 30 people willing to
learn to use of the AED, chest
compression and other emergency
measures. Trainees must be at least
16 years of age, but there is no maxi-
mum age.

We will schedule a training soon.
During the next few weeks, we need
the names of people who are willing
to be trained. We can have more
than 30, but we will not qualify to
receive the AED unless we have at
least 30.

If you are interested in attending the
training, please call the church office
or let Karen Miller know. She re-
ports, I have served two churches
in which people have had heart at-
tacks. One survived because of
quick response time on the part of
emergency workers and one did not.
I have personally been trained in
using an AED device, and it is a skill
that almost every adult can master
with practice. I have recently
learned that CPE is no longer done
with emergency breathing. Chest
compressions alone have been
shown effective if blood can be cir-
culated through the body. Learning
these skills can save a life! We are
very fortunate to have this AED
equipment provided for us at no
cost. Please take advantage of this
opportunity!

BISHOP GOODPASTERS DIALOGUES

Starting in 2013, United Methodist Churches in our area
united to start a volunteer tutoring program. Reading
Renewal matches volunteer tu-
tors to elementary schools in
Ashe and Alleghany counties,
grades K-5. Volunteers choose
the school, the time, and the
grade level. If you are interest-
ed in volunteering for the 2014-
2015 school year, you can con-
tact Cindy Atwood at 336-359-8154 or at
woodcb@yahoo.com or contact Kathy Mock at 336-
469-9387 or golden.mock765@gmail.com. Paul Bailey is
a volunteer from our church.

The program involves a four hour orientation training,
so that tutors will feel comfortable and know what to
expect and how to conduct tutoring sessions that will
benefit a child. Please make a difference in a child's life
by volunteering.
Bishop Goodpaster facilitated a panel discussion in June
at the Annual Conference about the future of our de-
nomination, including the possibility of denominational
division over issues such as Biblical interpretation and
issues related to homosexuality. During that time it was
announced that there would be a series of conversations
at various sites across the conference during the coming
months, open to interested United Methodists. These
90-minute sessions will utilize a variety of models, with
opportunities to engage in conversation in a spirit of
respect, care, and openness to the Holy Spirit. The one
nearest us is 2:30 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7
at FaithBridge United Methodist Church in Blowing
Rock.

Our church will be applying for a grant to
purchase food from Second Harvest Food
Pantry. If chosen to receive this grant, our
church will need to raise up to $500 during
the period of November 24th through Fri-
day, December 19th.

If we are notified that we qualify to re-
ceive the grant, the money raised will be
sent to Second Harvest and will be
matched by Second
Harvest Food Bank,
dollar for dollar
up to a maxi-
mum of
$500. The
grand total
will be deposited into our churchs ac-
count at Second Harvest Food Bank to
purchase food. Our funds will be due to
Second Harvest Food Bank by Wednes-
day, December 31st and will be credited,
along with the Food Bank's match, by
Wednesday, January 7th.

We will know soon if we qualify for the
grant. If you would like to make a dona-
tion to this effort, be sure to put
MATCHING GRANT on your check or en-
velope and make the check out to the
church. We will hold the checks until we
are certain that we qualify. Thanks for
your wonderful support for our food pan-
try.
