GE INNOVATION CHALLENGE

1. INTRODUCTION
The GE Innovation Challenge is the largest technical challenge at Shaastra 2013. The contest is a
holistic test of technical, analytical and creative prowess of the participants. This competition presents
the opportunity to flex your imagination and battle with the best of technical minds across India. This is
the best platform to showcase your innovative solution. The theme for the challenge this year is Rural
India.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Rural India today is burdened with a multitude of problems; there is immense scope for application of
technology at the grass-root level and brilliant technological solutions for the same. The GE Innovation
Challenge invites entries that impact rural India. The problem and its solution needs to be mentioned
very clearly by the team. The solutions need to be implementable and the teams have to
demonstrate a working prototype for the final round.

3. EVENT FORMAT
3.1. Round-1: Prelims (TDP Submission) By 16
th
December 2012
In this round, teams will need to submit a Team Description Paper (TDP). Teams will have to
provide your complete team details and an abstract of the solution related to the problem.
Note: TDP report submission will be as per the format prescribed.

3.2. Round-2: Final Round At Shaastra 2013 (5
th
to 8
th
January 2013)
Shortlisted teams from the first round will be invited to IIT Madras during Shaastra. Final round
will comprise of presentation and demonstration of your solution to the Panel of Judges
(includes both GE & IITM representatives). The top teams will be awarded prizes and
internships at GE.

4. EXPECTATIONS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA
The participants are required to point out a problem impacting rural India and its solution. The solution
needs to be implementable.
4.1. Evaluation Criteria
4.1.1. Impact and innovativeness of the proposed solution
4.1.2. Potential for large scale implementation

4.2. Round-1: Prelims (TDP Submission)
4.2.1. Identification of the problem in rural India and the proposed solution
4.2.2. Any statistical data, feedback from user
4.2.3. Brief idea, concept of the solution
4.2.4. A proof (pics/videos of prototype, 3D models, simulation etc) of concept of the solution.
A prototype would carry additional weightage
4.2.5. Implementation plan







4.3. Round-2: Final Round
4.3.1. A presentation and report submission (inclusive of all technical data, pics etc.) to judges
4.3.2. A demonstration of a working prototype of the solution
4.3.3. Brief Cost analysis

5. PRIZE MONEY
5.1. Total prize money is Rs. 1.5 Lakhs.
5.2. Internship offers to winning team members. Internship preference to the second and third team
members.

6. ELIGIBILITY
6.1. Maximum team size is three members.
6.2. All team members must be currently pursuing either undergraduate, graduate, post graduate or
doctorate degree in a recognized institution.
6.3. Solutions submitted in GE Innovation Challenge should not be submitted to any other Shaastra
event. Participants need to provide this disclaimer in their submissions. Also, participants
should provide references to any information they have been motivation from.
