Physical Education Lesson Plan Instructor: Ashley Thompson

Unit Topic: Pickleball Grade: 8

th
Grade
Lesson Topic: Forehand

Lesson Objectives: Today I would like the students to strive to
1. Demonstrate elements of the pickleball forehand so that they can participate in the
Wall Hits drill, Partner Hits drill, and Modified 2 vs. 2 Pickleball Games.
(M.NG.08.01)
2. Apply knowledge of the critical features of the pickleball forehand so that they
can participate in the Wall Hits drill, Partner Hits drill, and Modified 2 vs. 2
Pickleball Games. (K.MC.08.15)
3. Distinguish among elements of tactical problems in pickleball so that they can
participate in the Partner Hits drill and the Modified 2 vs. 2 Pickleball Games.
(K.NG.08.01)
4. Apply feedback to improve on their motor skills and movement patterns, fitness, and
physical activities so that they can perform at a higher level during the Modified 2 vs. 2
Pickleball Games. (B.FB.08.01)
General Rationale: This lesson helps to promote the future potential that a student a) has
learned skills to perform a variety of physical activities, b) is physically fit, c) participates
regularly in physical activity, d) knows the implications and benefits from involvement in
physical activities, and e) values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful
lifestyle.
Specific Rationale: This lesson will assist in the achievement of the following
benchmarks which have been selected from the unit plan.

M.NG.08.01 Demonstrate selected elements of tactical problems, including off-the-
object problems of scoring (e.g., maintaining a rally, setting up to attack, winning the
point, attacking as a pair/team) and preventing scoring (e.g., defending space, defending
against attack, defending as a pair/team) during modified net/wall games (e.g., small-
sided games, such as 2 vs. 2 to 3 vs. 3).

K.MC.08.15 Apply knowledge of movement concepts while performing non-locomotor
skills during participation in target, net/wall, invasion, and striking/fielding modified
games and outdoor activities in dynamic settings.

K.NG.08.01 Distinguish among all elements of tactical problems, including off-the
object problems of scoring (e.g., maintaining a rally, setting up to attack, winning the
point, attacking as a pair/team) and preventing scoring (e.g., defending space, defending
against attack, defending as a pair/team) during modified net/wall games (e.g., small-
sided games, such as 2 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 3).

B.FB.08.01 Apply, independently, internal (prior knowledge) and external feedback to
improve motor skills and movement patterns, fitness, and physical activities in dynamic
settings.

Facility Used: Gymnasium, Pickleball Court Set-Up (4 courts)

Equipment/Learning Materials: 40 Pickleball Rackets, 40 Pickleball Balls, 4 nets,
masking tape & jump ropes (for Instant Activity)

Evaluation:
1. Appraisal of student success in accomplishing todays objectives will be based on
their performance during the drills and game. Students will show mature form and
understanding of movement concepts throughout.
2. Appraisal of my teaching effectiveness will be based on personal reflections of my
performance using a teaching evaluation rating sheet.

Instruction & Management Procedures

Teaching Style: Command, Peer Evaluations
Cues: Forehand: Ready- Front hand below, handshake grip, balls of the feet, hands up
front. Turn- Turn and bend, racket back, racket head up. Strike- Back to front, elbow to
hip, rotate the hips. Finish- Tummy to target, finish high.
Lesson Sequence with Explanation:
1. INSTANT ACTIVITY---- Sidewalk Tennis (PE Central)
This activity is designed to help students learn the rules and scoring of tennis (singles or
doubles). Use masking tape to mark off "mini" pickleball courts. Place jump ropes on the
centerline and play as a "let" if the ball hits the rope. Students hit the pickleball with the
flat of their hands to assimilate the racket. Also, the server must let the ball bounce once
to serve it.Have students either partner up (singles) or get into a group of four (doubles).
Have one student from each partner/group get a ball while the other partner/group
members find a "mini" court. Each court starts when ready.
2. Intro: Today we will be learning important skills for our pickleball unit. We will be
practicing ball control when forehand hitting, and learning the different placements on
the court. We will practice hitting with partners using both the forehand and backhand
stroke and work our way up to a competitive game. Before we begin I just want to review
a couple rules. When you hear freeze I want everyone to immediately stop, place the ball
and racket on the ground, and look at me. Please be sure to respect each other and the
equipment.

3. Present Skill: Demonstrate skill 2X, give verbal cues, demonstrate with verbal cues 2X,
have student demo for class. Check for understanding.

4. Scan, Circulate, Give Feedback, & Pinpoint.
5. Practice: Students will each do 15 hits then switch (about 5-10 minutes).
6. Drill #1 Demo: Teacher demos 2X and then student demos. Check for understanding.
7. Drill #1: Wall Hits: Each student grabs a ball and a racket and finds a spot on a specific
wall. Have each student stand about 10 feet away from the wall and forehand hit against
the wall trying to aim for the same target each time. Each student completes 50 of these
hits. Once that is completed have students take 2 steps back and do the same thing at the
new distance, completing 50 as well. Emphasize that form is more important than getting
consecutive hits so if the ball gets out of control, stop and start again.
8. Scan, Circulate, Give Feedback, & Pinpoint.
9. Practice: Students will do 25 hits at each distance (about 5-10 minutes).
10. Drill #2 Demo: Teacher demos 2X and then student group demos. Check for
understanding.
11. Drill #2: Partner Hits, 1 vs. 1: Instruct students to get a partner and have them stand 15-
20 feet away from each other. Each student will need a racket and one ball between each
pair. Students will hit the ball back and forth, working on proper form for both the
forehand. Depending on space and class size, students can use the net and stand on
opposite sides. Students will need to use proper form and work on their accuracy when
hitting the ball to their partner.
12. Scan, Circulate, Give Feedback, & Pinpoint.
13. Practice: Students will do this for approximately 10 minutes or until they show that they
have the proper form and are hitting the ball with accuracy. (about 10 minutes)
14. Game Demo: Teacher demos 2X and then student group demos. Check for
understanding.
15. Game: Modified 4 vs. 4 Pickleball Games: Have students get into groups of four
(teacher can rearrange teams once they see the levels of competitions so that teams are
more even). Each group will play a modified game against another group. 4 courts will be
set up so 4 games will be going at once. Because there is not enough room for everyone
to be playing at once, the non-active pairs will be actively engaged on the sidelines
(cheering on their classmates and critiquing form). **If needed, teams can be of 5
members and they can play on a tennis court for more room. This will be more centered
on working on proper form and placement techniques rather than an intensified game.
16. Scan/Circulate, Give Feedback, & Pinpoint.
17. Practice: Games will go on until it is time to stop students for closure (about 15-20
minutes)
18. Check for Understanding/Closure Questions: Ask about the cues, What are the cues
that we used for the forehand? Have a student demonstrate the skill. Why is it
important to learn and be consistent hitting/placing the ball in pickleball?
19. Equipment In: Equipment will be left out for next class. The last class of the day will
pick up equipment before we go back in.
20. CLOSURE
Reflection Questions:
Can students demonstrate the correct form?
Can students distinguish different placement techniques?
Can students demonstrate the proper form of the forehand along with accuracy?
Can student demonstrate sportsman like conduct during the activity?
