What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis may sound like a big word, but it's actually pretty simple. You can divide it into two
parts: Photo is the !reek word "or #ight, and synthesis, is the !reek word "or putting together,
which e$plains what photosynthesis is. %t is using light to put things together. You may have noticed that
all animals and humans eat "ood, but plants don't eat anything. Photosynthesis is how plants eat. &hey
use this process to make their own "ood. 'ince they don't have to move around to "ind "ood, plants stay
in one place, since they can make their "ood anywhere as long as they have three things.
&he three things are (arbon Dio$ide, )ater, and #ight. You have probably heard o" (arbon dio$ide. %t is
a chemical that is in the air. *very time you breathe in, you breath in a bunch o" chemicals in the air,
including o$ygen and carbon dio$ide. +ere's what photosynthesis looks like:

Plants breathe, ,ust like us. &hey even have little openings that can look like mouths, but they are too
small "or us to see without a microscope. )hen we breathe in, we want to breath in o$ygen. Plants want
to breathe in (arbon Dio$ide. Plants also drink. &his is why you need to water plants or they will die.
&hey use their roots to suck water up into their bodies, and their little mouths to breath in the carbon
dio$ide. -nce they have both o" these things, all they need is light. #eaves are made up o" a bunch o"
tiny cells, where this happens. %nside the cells are tiny little things called chloroplasts. (hloroplasts are
what makes leaves green, and they are also what takes the carbon dio$ide, the water, and the light, and
turns them into sugar and o$ygen.
&he sugar is then used by the plants "or "ood, and the o$ygen is breathed out into the atmosphere. &his
process as a whole is photosynthesis.
