Theory Lesson- Olympic values

Laura Giles

The following lesson plan incorporates the Intercultural Understanding focus, Asia and Australias understanding of Asia, by drawing on the elements of the
Beijing Olympic Games 2008. There is a central activity that is dedicated to this area. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of North East Asia
(China), their culture, beliefs, and connections between the people of Asia, Australia and the rest of the world, based on their participation at the Olympic
Games.
This lesson also includes the elements of ICT, whereby the teacher firstly presents the topic using a couple of videos, then furthermore implements the
content using a PowerPoint, and finishing the lesson with a reflection. Students are required to reflect on the lesson, using their knowledge, to an online
class publication using Pad let.
Questions to prompt students higher order thinking:
Why are values in sport important?
What can we learn about the power of the Olympics?
What can sport teach us? Other than the skills of the sport and winning (Leadership, respect, commitment etc.)
Why is the flying of the flag so important/significant at the Olympic Games?
Why do Nations have flags?
What kind of actions break the rules in Olympic sports competition? What happens to people who break the rules?
Can judges or officials cheat? How? Why would they cheat? Is cheating worth it to win?
