DARKNESS
INT. THE HOUSE - DAY
CAMERA 3: Snaps on - its staring into the face of CHRIS
(30s). A lit cigarette dangles from his lips, surrounded by
a five oclock shadow. A backward ball cap covers a head of
messy black hair. A timestamp reads 17:52:23, 24, 25...
CAMERA 3: The camera goes in and out of focus as Chris
struggles to get it situated. It falls forwards, revealing a
concrete floor and Chriss shoes. Chris catches it and lifts
it back up - once again it centers on his face.
CHRIS (S.O.C)
Fuck.
CAMERA 3: Chris pulls out a screwdriver from his belt and
tightens a screw at the base of the camera where it connects
to the tripod.
CAMERA 1 turns on - ANDREW, who holds it, is in the LIVING
ROOM, which is sparsely furnished: couch, table, chairs, the
basic furnishings, covered by dusty white sheets. Andrew
scans the room. The timestamp reads 17:52:56, 57, 58...
A large, heavy door is to one side of the room, a wide
doorway to the kitchen on the other. The front windows are
barred and boarded over. The staircase at the back of the
room leads upstairs - it curves at the end, so just the
hallway mouth is visible.
Andrew walks toward and into the KITCHEN. It is modest,
small and empty. A door with a square window sits in the
back, leading to a fenced in backyard. Andrew looks through
the window and up at the sky - its grey, and thick with
flurries that whip around in the wind.
ANDREW
Im scared already.
Andrew walks back into the LIVING ROOM, where ERIC (30s)
sits on a sheet-covered chair, is hunched over a laptop,
which sits on the small, sheet-covered table.
Erics shirt reads "Paranormal Investigators of Michigan",
the words surround a stylized PIM logo.
Chris looks down at the laptop screen - Chriss face is on
it, in fact, its the same image as CAMERA 3. Chris brings
the walkie up to his mouth.

CONTINUED: 2.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Anybody there?
Eric grabs his walkie-talkie from the table.
ERIC
Roger. Whats taking so long?
CHRIS (WALKIE)
This damn thing wont stay upright
for some reason. I managed to jury
rig it with a screwdriver, but it
might come loose.
ERIC
Its a piece of shit. Video looks
good, though.
Eric tips the screen up to Andrew for a consult.
ANDREW
Yeah. Its great.
Eric speaks back into the walkie.
ERIC
Try the lights now.
Chris walks over to a switch on the wall and flicks it down.
The image changes: the room is now lit with an eerie white
glow only the camera can see.
The BASEMENT is an empty shell. A faint light glows from the
top of the staircase. A closed closet and a small sheet
covered table are the only notable features of the room.
Chris walks back to the camera - his eyes glow in the low
light camera. Chris waves his hand in front of his face.
CHRIS
Okay, thats dark.
(lifts walkie)
Can I turn the lights back on?
ERIC
Scared?
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Very funny. Seriously, though,
lights?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.
ERIC
Go ahead.
Chris flips the lights back on.
ERIC
Illuminator appears to be working
fine. Move the camera a little to
the right. I want more of the
staircase in the picture.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
My right or your right?
ERIC
Camera right.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Which is...
ERIC
My right, your left. How do you not
know camera right?
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Because I majored in a real
subject, not "communications."
Chris walks over to the camera and pivots it towards the
staircase.
Then he lifts the walkie-talkie to his mouth, still standing
directly in front of the camera.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
How bout now?
Immediately after saying that, the camera drops again,
focused on Chriss crotch.
Eric rolls his eyes.
ERIC
Well, your belt buckles nicely
centered.
Chris moves out of the way and extends his hands, presenting
the view.
ERIC
Lovely.
Chris pulls out a screwdriver and readjusts the camera.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.
ERIC
Looks good. Congrats, you didnt
fuck it up this time.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Do I get a cookie?
ERIC
No. Get back up here, I want to
make it back to the hotel before
the storm rolls in.
CHRIS (WALKIE)
Love you, too.
Andrew turns away from the screen and looks at Eric.
CAMERA 3: Chris gathers up his things, then eventually turns
off the lights and comes up the stairs. After a few second
the illuminator kicks in.
ANDREW
Are the cameras going to be running
the whole time?
ERIC
Yup.
ANDREW
What about the batteries?
ERIC
Twelve hours, give or take. Well
be out of here by three or four in
the morning, so we should be fine.
ANDREW
So how long have you and Chris
known each other?
ERIC
Too long.
There are footsteps from the kitchen. Andrew turns and sees
Chris walking into the living room.
ANDREW
So whats it like down there?
CHRIS
Whats it like? Cold and dark, just
like the rest of this damned place.
Why dont you go downstairs and
check it out?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 5.
ANDREW
No thanks, Im good.
Chris smirks and walks over to Eric, Andrew follows.
CAMERA 2: Flips on - staring into the lens is Jessie (late
20s), sporting a messy blonde ponytail. She steps back from
the camera, revealing the BEDROOM. A timestamp reads
17:59:51, 52, 53...
CAMERA 2: Theres a window to the right of the bed, and a
closet in front of it. The door to the closet is cracked
open slightly. Its decorated in a way as if it once
belonged to a young child: wallpaper designed for a kid, the
bed is small, and there is a rocking horse in the corner.
Eric changes signals on the laptop, the feed from CAMERA 2
appears on it. Eric picks up the walkie talkie.
ERIC
Lookin good, Jess. Turn the camera
a bit more to camera l-
Chris nudges him.
ERIC
YOUR right, maybe another inch or
two. Be sure were getting the
whole room in frame..
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Roger that.
Jessie adjusts the camera.
CAMERA 2: Jessie finishes setting up the camera, and sings
to herself a little while gathering sandbags and placing
them at the tripods feet.
Eric turns to Chris.
ERIC
Would you look at that? Some people
can turn on a camera without making
a big production out of it! Who
would have guessed, right?
Chris gives Eric the finger (in a friendly way), then walks
around the table and grabs a CAMERA CASE, which sits next to
a large black canvas bag.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 6.
CHRIS
Hey, make yourself useful and grab
the tripod, will ya?
Andrew grabs the bag, then follows Chris into the corner of
the room to the right of the front door.
Andrew puts the camera down on the mantle and angles it at
the camera theyre setting up. Andrew starts opening the
case.
ANDREW
So how many cameras are you using
tonight?
CHRIS
Three. One in the basement, one in
the upstairs bedroom, and Stella-
(pats camera case)
-this bad girl right here.
ANDREW
How many do you normally use?
Chris pauses for a second, and gives Andrew a look.
CHRIS
(as if said to a dog)
Three-
(then he considers, and-)
-though it really depends on the
size of the place were
investigating. The most weve used
was five.
ANDREW
So why did you pick these three
rooms?
CHRIS
Take that up with Rod.
ANDREW
What does Rod know that you dont?
CHRIS
A better question is "what do I
know that he doesnt?"
ANDREW
So, what do you know?
Chris smiles.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 7.
CHRIS
That ignorance is bliss.
Chris takes the tripod out of the bag and starts setting it
up.
Andrew grabs the camera off the mantle and walks through the
LIVING ROOM and to the door leading down to the BASEMENT.
Pointing the camera down the stairs, Andrew sees nothing but
blackness.
Andrew then flips on the lights, illuminating the basement.
The illuminator on CAMERA 3 switches off. He takes a few
steps down, then pauses, turns, and walks back up.
Andrew flips off the basement light, then walks back into
the LIVING ROOM. CAMERA 3 goes black for a second, then the
illuminator kicks on.
Andrew once again looks over Erics shoulder at the laptop
screen, which still shows CAMERA 2s feed. Jessie is holding
the sides of the camera.
ERIC
Stop! Perfect. Hit the lights.
Jessie walks over to the door and flicks a light switch.
The illuminator on Camera 2 flips on after a moment, bathing
everything in glowing white light.
Almost imperceptibly, the sheets on the bed have rumpled a
little, and the closet door is opened just a little more.
ERIC
Ok, I lied. Tilt it down a skoche.
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Whats a skoche?
ERIC
A legitimate unit of measurement.
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Define it.
ERIC
Half a little bit.
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Helpful.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 8.
ERIC
Just move it slowly until I tell
you to stop.
Jessie flips the light back on, then walks over to the
camera. She slowly tilts it down.
ERIC
Ok, stop! Looks good. Lock it down
and get back here.
Eric puts down his walkie-talking and flips the signal on
the laptop. He starts typing something.
CAMERA 2: Jessie gathers up her things.
ANDREW
So whats the deal with this place,
anyhow?
ERIC
Not my area. Didnt Rod and Mary
explain this to you?
ANDREW
Nope.
CAMERA 2: Jesse walks over to the window and looks outside.
ERIC
Okay, well, they interview the
clients and find out the histories
and hotspots, but were not allowed
to know any specifics. Lets say
somebody killed themselves in the
bathtub, then wed be looking for
anything related to that. They just
tell us where to look, and we dont
find out why until the
investigation is complete.
ANDREW
And does that work?
Chris walks over to them.
CHRIS
Like I said, ignorance is bliss.
(to Eric)
I need the spare battery for
Stella.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 9.
ERIC
Its dead? Shit. Hold on.
CAMERA 2: Jessie walks over to the door, shuts off the
lights, and leaves the room. After a few seconds the
illuminator kicks in.
Eric searches through a bag next to the table until he digs
out a battery.
ERIC
Youre lucky I brought the spare.
He offers it to Chris, who takes it, then walks over to the
camera.
Jessie walks down the stairs and over to Eric.
ANDREW
Is keeping completely ignorant so
important?
JESSIE
Well, beyond the basics of the
scientific method, the experience
is much better if its a mystery.
Its just that much more... I dont
know, real when its just you and
the darkness. Silence.
Eric is staring intently at the computer screen.
JESSIE
This is for your film class, right?
ANDREW
Yeah.
JESSIE
Why this? Arent there people being
oppressed? Oppression sells,
doesnt it? Why paranormal
investigators?
ANDREW
Im trying to do something
different for my project.
JESSIE
Different?
(Jessie snickers)
Cant you just show them a clip of
Ghost Adventurers or any of the

other forty-seven ghost hunting
shows on TV?
Andrew laughs.
ANDREW
Ive always been interested in
ghost hunting anyways, but Ive
been too busy with school to
actually pursue it as a hobby.
Since we have to make a
documentary, I figured this would
be the next best thing.
Eric takes a drag from his cigarette.
ERIC
Makes sense. What kind of
documentary are you making?
ANDREW
What do you mean?
ERIC
I mean, is there an angle or a
narrative, or are you just hanging
out and does it have a purpose, or
is it just going to be a broad look
at what paranormal investigators
do?
ANDREW
Well, mostly the latter. The
ultimate goal is to give people a
look at what makes you guys tick.
Its a character study, if
anything. Do you all believe in
this, what are your backgrounds, so
on and so forth.
Eric laughs.
ERIC
What makes us tick, huh?
ANDREW
What? Youre fascinating people.
Eric laughs again, prompting Andrew to laugh as well.

ERIC
"This week on a very special Ghost
Hunters..."
A loud BANG breaks the silence. All three instantly turn
around and look at the front door.
ERIC
The fuck was that?
Andrew walks over to the front door and pulls it open. Wind
WHIPS LOUDLY through the doorway. He points the camera up,
getting a look at the side of the house.
There are a few large branches near the top of the house -
then he looks down by the window, where some branches are
pressed against the window.
Andrew turns to look at Eric.
ANDREW
Here, take this for a second.
Andrew hands the camera off to Eric. Finally the camera gets
a look at:
ANDREW (20s), is wearing a UM hoodie, faded jeans, and
fingerless gloves.
He walks over to the window. A tree branch has broken off
and is now scraping against it. He gives it a pull and the
branch snaps off.
Andrew tosses the branch aside, then walks back to the front
door.
Jessie is standing in the doorway, looking up at something.
Andrew walks past her to Eric and puts his hand out-
ANDREW
Can I get that?
ERIC
Sure.
Eric gives the camera back, and Andrew looks up at Jessies
sight line - the power lines are rocking in the wind,
uncomfortably close to a trees branches.
ANDREW
The wind is really picking up. Is
it supposed to snow tonight?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 12.
JESSIE
Possibly. Massive cold front,
though. Supposed to drop to -10 or
so, maybe colder.
Andrew steps back as Jessie closes the door.
ANDREW
Isnt that going to be a problem?
Shouldnt you reschedule?
JESSIE
Sweetie, we live in Michigan. This
is nothing. Were used to it.
ANDREW
What if the power goes out?
JESSIE
The cameras would be fine, since
everything is on battery power. It
would just be really, really dark
and probably really, really cold.
CHRIS
We picked a bad weekend to do this.
ANDREW
Why is it a bad weekend?
CHRIS
You mean other than the annoying
Arctic weather?
ANDREW
Yeah.
CHRIS
Thats about it.
Andrew laughs.
JESSIE
Oh hush. You grew up in Canada,
didnt you? Shouldnt you be used
to this?
CHRIS
Hey, I left Canada for a reason.
JESSIE
To come to the second-coldest
state? Excellent choice.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 13.
Jessie pauses as the wind howls outside.
CHRIS
Cold spots are gonna be useless.
ANDREW
Whats that?
CHRIS
I thought you were familiar with
all of this stuff?
ANDREW
For the doc, not me.
ERIC
One of the things paranormal
investigators look for are pockets
of cold air, sudden temperature
drops and things like that.
CHRIS
When its ten below outside it can
be hard to differentiate between a
ghost and a draft.
ANDREW
Well, couldnt we just turn the
heat on?
CHRIS
The house has electric radiators.
We had to turn them off to keep
from interfering with the thermal
readers. So be sure to come bundled
up tonight. That cold front is
comin in hard and fast.
JESSIE
Besides, thermal readers are, in my
opinion, totally worthless. So many
things give off heat, all it does
is cause you to jump to
conclusions.
ANDREW
What kind of things should I
expect?
JESSIE
Noises. Shadows. Smells. The usual
haunting stuff.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 14.
ANDREW
Whats the scariest thing youve
ever experienced during an
investigation?
JESSIE
Every time I turn a corner and see
Chriss face.
Chris looks up from adjusting Camera 4.
CHRIS
Hilarious.
Jessie laughs.
JESSIE
Okay, seriously? We were
investigating an old TB hospital
just outside of Detroit. We got in
just after midnight. For the first
two hours nothing out of the
ordinary happened. I was alone,
investigating, surprise, surprise,
the morgue, when I got a whiff of
something that, for lack of a
better term, smelled like death. I
tried to figure out where it was
coming from for a bit, then I
heard... a squeaking noise coming
from the corner. I looked over and
noticed a small medical table - you
know, the kind that carries the
surgical equipment - rolling.
CAMERA 4: FLIPS ON - looking into Chriss face. Now that all
four cameras are running a TIME STAMP appears on them
18:07:33, 34, 35...
ANDREW
Rolling?
JESSIE
Not like someone was pushing it or
anything. More like someone had
bumped into it, and now it was just
coasting across the room.
ANDREW
Did someone?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 15.
JESSIE
What?
ANDREW
Bump into it?
JESSIE
Nope. The room was empty when I
entered and there was only one
door.
ANDREW
What did you do?
JESSIE
I got out of there as fast as I
could.
Chris looks over his shoulder at Jessie.
CHRIS
Tell him what happened next.
Jessie rolls her eyes.
ANDREW
What happened next?
JESSIE
I...I tripped, knocked over an
examination table, and sprained my
ankle.
ANDREW
Did you ever figure out what made
the table to move?
ERIC
A ghost, duh.
Everyone laughs.
ERIC
All of you, move out of the way so
I can get a look at the angle.
Chris, Andrew, and Jessie move out of the way to reveal the
main room of the house to Camera 4.
ERIC
Hit the lights.
Chris hits the light switch by the door.

CAMERA 4: Everything is dark for a moment, then the
illuminator kicks in, and we see the room glow the familiar
white.
ERIC
Looks good. Switch on the motion
detector.
Chris goes behind the camera and presses a button. The
camera starts to slowly move, tracking the motions of people
in the room.
ANDREW
Whats the deal with this camera?
ERIC
The camera has a motion detector on
it. Sonar, just like with
floodlights. If it detects anything
moving in the room it automatically
turns towards it.
ANDREW
Wont we be moving through the
room?
ERIC
Yes, but not all the time. And we
dont want to miss anything
happening at the edge of frame.
Also, its been modified to detect
EMF signatures, and supposedly it
will prioritize them over people
moving around the room. I honestly
have no idea how it really works,
but Rod insists that it does.
ANDREW
Can the cameras be controlled
remotely?
ERIC
Yeah, but all we can really do is
turn them off and zoom in and out.
(to Chris)
Chris, looks good. Help me pack
this up so we can get out of here.
Chris turns the lights back on, and he and Eric start
packing up the laptop and related equipment.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 17.
ANDREW
Is it really important to keep all
the cameras on the whole time?
JESSIE
We find that a complete record of
the events keeps everything on the
level. That way, if something
spooky actually does happen on
camera, weve got proof that we
didnt selectively edit to create
an effect.
ANDREW
Is that a problem in the...
Industry?
JESSIE
Im not going to badmouth anyone.
Its just important to have a full
timeline to reference when we meet
up with the client to go over what
we discovered. If anything.
ANDREW
All of this sounds almost identical
to ghost hunting shows you see on
TV.
JESSIE
Well, the process is the same. Most
of those groups were actual ghost
hunting groups that just happened
to get TV shows. They tend to
fabricate a lot of what they see
for ratings. If those shows were
anything like REAL ghost hunting,
they would be very boring.
ANDREW
I thought you werent going to
badmouth anyone.
JESSIE
Its not badmouthing if its the
truth.
Chris laughs as he gathers his things.
CHRIS
Another difference between us and
people with TV shows? They also
dont do any investigations when
its this cold out.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 18.
Eric walks to the front door, carrying three bags.
ERIC
I try not to envy you guys. But
its hard.
Eric walks out the door to the car.
CHRIS
Were done. Lets go grab dinner. I
could use a beer
ANDREW
Sure.
Andrew turns off CAMERA 1.
CAMERA 4: The group gathers their bags and leaves through
the front door, talking S.O.C. They close the door behind
them and lock it.
CAMERA 2: Everything is quiet for ten seconds. Then the
closet door swings open. While the rest of the room glows
white, the camera cant see anything inside the closet.
CAMERA 2: The closet door wavers, jittering half-open, then
swings shut.
The cameras accelerate to 8:56 PM.
INT. BAR - NIGHT
CAMERA 1 turns on. The TIMESTAMP appears on all four
cameras, letting us know its 20:56:21, 22, 23...
People mill around the noisy bar. Eric, Chris and Jessie sit
at a table, eating dinner and having drinks. Andrew is
behind the camera at the end of the table.
Chris looks over and sees that the camera is on.
CHRIS
I dont think your teacher is going
to consider excessive drinking in a
loud bar all that essential to the
ghost hunting process.
ERIC
I beg to differ.
Eric picks up his mug and slams back the rest of his beer.
He raises his finger to signal the waitress.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 19.
ANDREW
Well, I did say I wanted to see
what makes you tick. In Erics case
the answer seems to be cheap beer.
ERIC
Its why I get up in the morning.
Jessie laughs.
ANDREW
So why arent you coming with us
tonight?
ERIC
Because Im not a masochist.
ANDREW
Seriously, though.
ERIC
I just set up the tech and make
sure its recording.
CHRIS
Its important to have an impartial
observer.
ANDREW
Whys that?
JESSIE
Well, just like we dont know the
history of the house, we need
someone who isnt actually on the
hunt to watch the videos.
CHRIS
Lets say I get a little freaked
out in the basement, and I swear
there was a shadow moving across
the wall. Now I might be so
convinced it happened that Im able
to recreate it, all because I
WANTED to find something.
ERIC
But if I dont see it, or we dont
see anything after watching the
footage, it probably didnt really
happen.
(CONTINUED)

JESSIE
And the video is the only proof we
have - anybody can tell a ghost
story. We want to show people one.
ANDREW
So, what, youre just going to sit
in front of a computer, watching
us?
ERIC
God, no. I mean, obviously I have
to make sure the feeds keep
recording, but actually sitting in
front of a screen, watching you
stumble around a dark house for
five hours? Again - not a
masochist.
ANDREW
What lead you to work with Rod and
Mary?
ERIC
I taught an editing class and Rod
was in it. He told me what he did
and I thought it was intriguing, so
he hired me. Still pays shit,
though, especially on days like
this.
The group laughs with Eric. Camera 1 turns off.
The cameras accelerate until 10:47 PM.
CAMERA 2: The closet door swings open, hitting the wall. It
remains open for a second, then SLAMS SHUT. Theres a mark
left on the wall where the doorknob struck it.
The cameras accelerate until 11:46:46, 47, 48, 49...
INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
Camera 1 turns on. The timestamp reads 23:46:49...
Andrew scans the bedroom. Two queen size beds fill most of
it. A laptop sits on a large desk in the corner, Jessie is
hunched over it, working.
Andrew walks to the window, his reflection is visible in it.
The wind outside rattles the frame. Theres almost no
visibility.

ANDREW
Looks like its starting to snow.
You think Rod will cancel?
Jessie laughs.
JESSIE
Rod? No way. An earthquake couldnt
stop him.
Andrew walks over to where Jessie is sitting.
ANDREW
Hes that dedicated, huh?
JESSIE
Hes a professional in every aspect
of his life. He doesnt like to let
people down. He absolutely loves
ghost hunting.
ANDREW
How does Rod afford all of this
stuff? And to pay you guys.
JESSIE
Hes very wealthy. Inheritance and
such. We dont make much, about
$200 per investigation, and we only
do about one or two a month, so he
can afford it.
ANDREW
Do the people who hire you guys pay
you too?
JESSIE
Not usually. Like I said, Rod does
it for fun.
ANDREW
What do Rod and Mary do for a
living?
JESSIE
Rod is an investment banker and
Mary owns an art gallery. Nothing
glamorous, but it affords them time
to do this.
ANDREW
What time do we have to meet them
downstairs?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 22.
JESSIE
Around midnight. Havent you
already interviewed them?
ANDREW
No. We just met and talked about
what Im going to do during the
investigation. Im going to do a
real interview afterward.
JESSIE
Sounds good.
ANDREW
Do you mind if we do a quick
interview right now? Ill get more
formal interviews with everyone
later, but its good to have one or
two in the thick of things and on
the fly.
JESSIE
Not at all. Is this your first
documentary?
ANDREW
Yeah, first time filming anything,
really. Kind of learning as I go.
Turn the chair to face the bed, sit
up straight-
(sits down on bed)
Now look past the camera to me, and
just speak normally.
JESSIE
Hows my hair?
Andrew laughs.
ANDREW
Perfect. How did you get started
doing this?
JESSIE
I grew up loving ghost stories,
tales of the supernatural and all
that. My mom is actually a good
friend of Rod and Mary, and after
she told me about what they did I
asked if they needed help one day,
and now here we are. Over the
course of a couple investigations
they taught me the ropes, how to

set up the camera equipment, how to
use everything properly, and Ive
been helping out when I can ever
since.
Andrew looks at the camera setup on her laptop.
ANDREW
So how does this camera setup work?
It seems pretty sophisticated.
Jessie glances over at the laptop.
JESSIE
No, its actually quite simple. The
cameras in the basement and bedroom
are hooked into Erics hub. We can
control them remotely if we need
to.
ANDREW
Will you be using night vision?
JESSIE
Thats right. Well have
flashlights so we can move around,
but the cameras all have
illuminators on them, which youve
seen.
ANDREW
The white glowy look?
JESSIE
Right. It might be pitch black to
us, but the camera picks up the
whole room. And this one (points to
CAMERA 4) has the motion detector
on it, which Eric told you about.
ANDREW
Has it ever caught anything?
JESSIE
Its pretty new, weve only used it
a couple of times. Once, though.
ANDREW
And?

JESSIE
We were investigating an old
warehouse in Lansing. It locked on
to something for a few seconds,
then followed it across the room
before resetting. I swear, I have
never seen Rod so ecstatic. We
actually had to calm him down.
ANDREW
Were you scared?
JESSIE
A little. I mean, it was the first
time wed ever gotten a reading on
it, so everybody was kind of
freaked.
ANDREW
Did you ever figure out what it
caught on to?
Jessie shrugs.
JESSIE
Nope. Whole thing lasted three
seconds, then nothing out of the
ordinary happened for the rest of
the investigation.
ANDREW
So it could have been a glitch of
some sort?
JESSIE
Thats certainly my suspicion.
ANDREW
And if it happens again tonight?
A beat.
JESSIE
I dont know. Id be a little less
skeptical. Probably a lot more
cautious.
ANDREW
Why cautious?
Jessie shrugs again.

JESSIE
I know that most of the stuff that
exists on those ghost hunting TV
shows is bogus, but you do this
long enough, you start experiencing
things that you simply cant
explain. Im sure most of it has a
perfectly logical explanation, but
after each place you visit and
investigate, it starts to become
oddly....real, in a way.
A knock on the door breaks the silence. Jessie gets up and
answers it.
Chris enters, now wearing a heavy overcoat.
ANDREW
What about you, Chris? Are you
frightened in any way?
CHRIS
Only inasmuch as Ill be in a
creepy house at night. I dont
really believe in ghosts or
anything.
ANDREW
So why are you here?
CHRIS
Its a fun hobby, I like being
scared. Plus, having a skeptic
around balances out these nuts a
little. Everyone else takes it very
seriously.
ANDREW
Why dont you believe in ghosts?
CHRIS
Because Im rational.
JESSIE
Dont be mean.
CHRIS
Just being honest. Theres never
been any scientific proof of
ghosts. Until we find some, Ill
continue to remain skeptical.
(CONTINUED)

ANDREW
So none of this stuff actually
scares you?
CHRIS
I never said it didnt scare me, I
just believe that whatever fear I
experience isnt something haunting
me, its just the natural terror
that comes from looking into the
darkness.
ANDREW
How did you first get started
working with Rod and Mary?
CHRIS
Ad in the paper.
ANDREW
What?
CHRIS
Rod placed an ad seeking help. I
answered.
Chris turns to Jessie, seemingly annoyed with the questions.
CHRIS
We good to go?
JESSIE
Im all set here. Everything seems
to still be working properly. Just
waiting for Rods call.
ANDREW
Is Eric meeting us downstairs?
JESSIE
Hell be with Rod and Mary. Youll
meet Joe tonight as well, hes
going straight to the house.
Jessies cell phone rings. She reaches onto the table and
flicks it open.
JESSIE
Speak of the devil.

Hey Rod, you downstairs? (beat)
Well be right down.
Jessie puts the phone away and stands.

Jessie closes the laptop and places it in her bag. Chris
hoists his backpack onto his shoulder and walks to the door.
INT. HOTEL HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
Andrew follows them into the hallway, still filming. As they
walk towards the elevator, Chris looks back at Andrew.
CHRIS
How much are you going to actually
be filming?
ANDREW
Everything. So Ive got lots of
room when Im editing.
CHRIS
You think showing us riding an
elevator will make for a great
documentary?
ANDREW
Too early to tell. I just know I
want to film everything.
CHRIS
Oh, well, in that case...
Chris gives the finger to the camera.
ANDREW
I can always cut out the stupid
parts.
Jessie laughs. They arrive at the elevator. She reaches over
and pushes the "Down" button.
ANDREW
"I aint afraid of no ghost."
Jessie and Chris both look at him and roll their eyes. The
elevator DINGS and the doors slide open.

INT. HOTEL ELEVATOR - NIGHT
The group walks into the elevator, and Jessie presses the
Ground Floor button. They ride in silence, as "The Girl
from Ipanema" plays from the speakers.
The elevator DINGS as they reach the ground floor. The doors

Where theyre greeted by ROD (50s). Sporting salt-and-pepper
hair and horn-rimmed glasses, he holds a large overcoat in
his arms.
ROD
Hey, everybody, ready to get

There are murmurs of assent from Chris and Jessie. Rod turns
to Andrew, and offers a hand. As they shake-
ROD
Good to see you again, Andrew. They

ANDREW
Im having a great time so far.
Mary in the car?
ROD
Indeed she is. My cars right out
front.
They head for the front door of the hotel.
ROD
Well lead the way. Do you know how
to get there from here in case we
get separated?
CHRIS
Yeah, shouldnt be a problem. I
have the GPS just in case.
ROD
Good. Call me on the cell if you

They reach the exit of the hotel. The doors slide open, wind
and snow howl in through the opening.

CHRIS
Yes dad.
EXT. HOTEL PARKING LOT - NIGHT
The group walks out into the parking lot. An SUV waits at
the curb, idling. Rod heads for it, opens the door, then
looks over to Andrew and company.
ROD
Seriously, be careful!
CHRIS
Get going already! Well see you
there.
Rod waves, then gets into the SUV. Mary reaches out and
waves, prompting Andrew to wave back. It pulls away from the
curb and leaves the lot.
Andrew follows Chris and Jessie through the parking lot.
Eventually they get to a second SUV identical to Rods.
Chris unlocks the car and everyone climbs in.
INT. SUV - CONTINUOUS
Everyone puts on their seatbelts - Andrew films Chris and
Jessie from the back seat.

Now onwards, to ghosts!
She dramatically points forward.
JESSIE
Oh, come on. That was funny.
Chris attempts to start the car, but it wont turn over.

ANDREW
So, what does Joe do?
JESSIE
Hes a professor of psychology at
UM. He just loves ghost hunting and
the paranormal. Thats why we
actively recruited him. We wanted
an academic in the group, and since
Chris is an idiot, well, there you
go.
CHRIS
I hate you.
JESSIE
You love me. Hey Andrew, let me see
the camera.
ANDREW
What, why? This is my documentary.
JESSIE
Come on, I just want to see it.
Andrew hands over the camera to Jessie, who grabs it and
points it at Andrew.
JESSIE
So, tell me. What do YOU hope to
see tonight?
ANDREW
Whatever gives me the best footage.
JESSIE
Spoken like a true filmmaker. Do
you believe in ghosts?
ANDREW
Im on the fence. When I was
younger I thought I saw a couple
ghosts at an old lodge my folks
used to take me to in the summer.
It was near an old Civil War
battleground, so I guess the place
had a reputation.

JESSIE
Looks like the battery is running
low.
ANDREW
Shit, let me see it. I have a spare
in my bag.
Jessie hands it over, and as she does it shuts off.
The other cameras accelerate again, uneventfully until
11:58.
CAMERA 4: A WOMAN enters the house through the front door.
She turns on the lights and moves from room to room -
staying on the first floor. The camera doesnt slow down, so
she seems to zip about, moving to the kitchen and back,
reading, making phone calls. Eric enters the house, talks to
the woman, checks the motion sensor on Camera 4, then walks
out the front door.
Cameras finally stop accelerating at 12:37 A.M.
EXT. THE HOUSE - NIGHT
CAMERA 1 turns on. The TIMESTAMP reads 00:37:22, 23, 24...
Andrew climbs out of the SUV, following Chris and Jessie.
Snow blows into the car before he can slam the door shut.
Andrew shivers, then hurries over to the house.
Andrew sees Rod and MARY (50s) walking over from their own
SUV. Andrew pauses to let a car back out of the driveway.
Eric waves to Andrew as he drives past, then heads off down

Oh, hi! Im so glad you made it! I
thought for sure the cold would

INT. THE HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Everyone walks into the living room, brushing the snow off
their clothes.
ROD
Of course we came! I tried calling
earlier to let you know wed be

ANGELA
The storm has been messing with my
cell all day. Service comes and
goes. I just got here, maybe twenty
minutes before you did.
She looks over at Andrew, puzzled.
ANGELA
Whats this?
Andrew extends his hand for a handshake, which Angela
receives with a smile.
ANDREW
Hi, Im Andrew. Im working on a
project for school on paranormal
investigators. Rod and Mary said I
could tag along tonight.

Oh yes, Rod told me about you. No

Rod nods.
ROD
Well be calling you tomorrow
morning to set up an appointment.
ANGELA
Excellent. I cant wait.
ANDREW
Excuse me, but would it be possible
to get a quick interview from you?
Rod walks over to where the group is unpacking everything,
leaving Andrew with Angela.
ANGELA
Um....sure, that wouldnt be a
problem.
ANDREW
Excellent. So, what can you tell me
about the house?
ANGELA
I inherited it from my father.
ANDREW
You grew up here?
ANGELA
No, after my mom died my father
remarried and bought the place with
his new wife and her two kids.
ANDREW
It seems like the electricity would
be shut off if that were the case.
ANGELA
I had it turned on temporarily. The
only time I can get here is at
night, and there is no way Id be
here without any light.

ANGELA
Yeah. The house feels weird to me
whenever I have to come over.
Noises from the bedrooms and
basement, and just a
general...uneasiness.
ANDREW
What if we dont find anything?
ANGELA
Im selling it anyway, Ill just be
honest. Some people seem to dig
that sorta thing.
Rod walks back over to where Andrew and Angela are standing.
ROD
I dont mean to interrupt, but
were a little behind schedule and
we should get started.
ANDREW
Angela, thank you so much. If youd
like, I can send you a copy of the
project when its done.
ANGELA
Of course. You can get my address
from Rod.
ANDREW
Ill do that.
ROD
Drive safe. Talk to you tomorrow.
ANGELA
I cant wait. Be safe, and keep
warm.
Angela grabs her coat and walks out the door, the wind and
snow flying in the door as she leaves. Rod closes the door
behind her. He turns around and walks to the center of the
living room.
Andrew walks over to the table where Jessie and Chris are
setting up the equipment. Among the tools are: EMF meters,
audio recorders, etc.

ANDREW
What is all this stuff?
Jessie indicates the various tools as she explains.
JESSIE
Well, these are EMF detectors. It
measures electromagnetic fields.
Ghosts - spirits, whatever you want
to call them - supposedly give off
an electromagnetic field that this
can detect. Of course, most
electronic devices do that as well,
so its not the most reliable
indicator.
She picks up a small, silver device.
JESSIE
This is my favorite little toy.
Its an EVP Field Processor.
ANDREW
EVP?
JESSIE
Electronic voice phenomena. Noises
that often sound like speech that
come through static, white noise,
background noise. This plugs into a
digital voice recorder and gives us
a visual cue whenever anything has
been picked up by the recorder.
ANDREW
Youve had more luck with EVP?
JESSIE
Thats subjective. You can almost
always hear something, but
sometimes the ears hear what they
want to hear. Its why we got this.
Its not perfect, but I think it
helps.
Andrew picks up a small, black device.
ANDREW
Whats this?

sensors to record any sudden

Not that it stopped her from

JESSIE
You complain too much.
The front door opens, then slams shut. Andrew turns to see
JOE (30s), wearing a large overcoat, shaking the snow off
his boots and coat.
JOE
Jesus, its cold out there.
Andrew walks up to him and extends his hand.
ANDREW
Hi, Im Andrew. You must be Joe.
JOE
Mary and Rod have told me about
you. The student, right?
ANDREW
Yup. Would you mind if I asked you
a couple of questions?
Chris walks up to them.
CHRIS
Of course he wouldnt. Joe LOVES
being on camera. Can I have the
keys to your car? I left something

JOE

ANDREW
Why ghost hunting?
JOE
Rod asked me, I said yes. Seemed
interesting. But I dont like that
phrase. "Ghost hunting" - that puts
a negative spin on things. Theres
more to it than just looking for
ghosts.
ANDREW
Do you believe in ghosts?
JOE
I believe in what evidence
confirms. While Im not "ghost
hunting," as it were, I would
absolutely love it if we could find
some sort of hard evidence.
ANDREW
What are your thoughts on the so
called reality shows like "Ghost
Adventurers" or "Paranormal State?"
JOE
Insulting crap.
ANDREW
So not a fan, then?
Joe laughs.

JOE
Nope. I stuck around for a few more
minutes trying to get some readings
but got nothing.
ANDREW
I would have gotten the hell out of
there.
JOE
Well, I dont scare easily, but I
was genuinely curious. I tried to
get Jessie to come get some
readings but she was too scared.
Chris walks back inside, a small torrent of snow swirling in
behind him.
CHRIS
Seriously, fuck snow!
JOE
Well, you do live in Michigan.
Andrew turns toward Chris.
ANDREW
So are you excited about tonight?
Chris glares at Andrew a death stare. He finishes stomping
out his boots and walks over to the center of the room.
Jessie nods to Joe.

JOE
Okay. Its just that... Well...
Ever since I was a little kid, Ive
wanted to actually meet a ghost -
and then punch it right in its smug
fucking face.
ANDREW
What- why?
JOE
(suddenly dead serious)
Ive got my reasons.
ANDREW
Wait, what?
Andrew turns around and sees Mary walking up to them. We now
get a clear look at her: greying hair with smooth skin that
belies her real age.
MARY
Theyre just making fun of you,
sweetheart.
Andrew spins around to look, and sees that people are
quietly laughing at him.
ANDREW
(Derisively) Oh haha. What do you

MARY
I suppose youre looking for an

ghosts," right?
Andrew laughs.

Not all of us fall under the

everything is a ghost. I like to
think Im more grounded. So I
guess, like every investigation, I
hope to find something we havent
experienced before. Helps keep
things fresh.
Rod clears his throat, attracting attention. Everyone turns
around and walks up to him.
ROD
Alright guys, now that were done
hazing the kid, lets get started.
Our hot spots tonight are in two
areas, upstairs in the small
bedroom, and the basement. Well
split in teams of two. Jessie and
Mary, you start in the bedroom.
Ill go with Chris and Joe into the
basement, then well switch after
an hour. Andrew, which would you
rather check out first?
ANDREW
Well, if this room is going to be
empty, Id like to try my hand at
some EVP if thats alright.
ROD
Works for me. Itd be good to have
someone down here as well. Feel
free to shadow whoever, just dont
get in the way. Alright, last
check. Everyone got their
flashlights?
People check for their equipment, then murmur in assent.
ANDREW
Ive just got the one on the

More murmurs of assent.

Each member of the team grabs their necessary instruments
and walks to their respective areas, turning off the lights
in the house as they go.
Andrew walks to the kitchen and glances out the back door.
Between the snow and the darkness, he cant see a thing.
CAMERA 2: Jessie and Mary enter the bedroom. Jessie places a
bag down on the bed, opens it up and pulls out an EMF meter.
She begins to walk around the room looking for
abnormalities. Mary pulls out a tape recorder and begins to

CAMERA 3: Rod, Chris and Joe enter the basement. Chris and
Joe pull out EMF meters while Rod uses a recorder for EVP.
Andrew turns around and walks back to the main room. He
walks up to the equipment and takes a tape recorder and
field processor and looks it over.
ANDREW
Lets see how this works.
Andrew puts the camera on a sideboard, aimed at the table.
He sits down at it and starts to experiment with the tape
recorder.
He records for a few seconds, then listens to the tape.
Hearing nothing, he sets it to record again, then holds it
out at arms length.
ANDREW
Is there someone in here with me?
Theres no response for a long beat.
Then theres a CREAK from the KITCHEN. Andrew puts down the
tape recorder and jumps out of the chair. He moves toward
the kitchen, walking out of CAMERA 1s frame.
Suddenly he remembers the camera and rushes back, grabbing
it off the table.
Andrew then heads into the kitchen. One of the cupboard

Then he walks back into the living room and puts the camera
down on the sideboard. He sits down and takes the voice
recorder once more.
Starting a new recording, he holds up the recorder and
speaks-
ANDREW
Do you want us here? Or do you want
us to leave?
Silence.
ANDREW
Is there something you want to say
to me?
Silence.
Andrew waits a few more second, then stops the recorder and
rewinds it.
CAMERA 2: Jessie walks over to the closet and slowly opens
it. She crouches down and notices something, then calls Mary
over. Mary joins her at the closet, kneeling to get a better
look.
Andrew holds the tape recorder close to his ear, then hits
play on it. Theres a few seconds of static, and then a deep
sound that doesnt belong.
Andrew stops the recorder and rewinds it. Andrew walks over
to the camera. He holds the recorder next to it so that the
audio will come through clearly.
He presses play on the tape again, and more static is heard.
Then, barely audible, there are light SCRATCHES, and then a
crying sound.
A low guttural growl starts to fill the air. Andrew looks

heads up the stairs.
Andrew grabs the camera and walks over to the window. He
cant see anything past the boards, but the sound of a
scraping branch is clearly audible.
ANDREW

Andrew hears footsteps and turns. He sees Chris walking into
the room. Andrew hurries over, holding out the recorder.
CHRIS

ANDREW

CHRIS

Andrew plays the EVP back to him - the sound is still on it,
though more faint than the first time.
CHRIS
I dont hear anything.
Andrew rewinds the tape recorder.
ANDREW
Its there, listen carefully.
Andrew hits play on the tape recorder once again. The crying
sound is very audible.

Come on.
Chris heads up the stairs, with Andrew following close

CAMERA 3: While Rod and Joe examine a corner of the
basement, the sheet covering the table slowly slides to the
ground. Rod notices the movement out of the corner of his
eye, and turns to look. He calls Joe over with him, and they
talk while examining the table with their EMF readers.
Chris and Andrew move down the hallway towards the bedroom.
There are no pictures on the walls, just squares of slightly
brighter paint where they were once hung.
Chris slowly opens the door and enters the bedroom.
MARY
Look at how deep the scratches are.
JESSIE
This is creepy. What happened-
Wait, dont tell me.

Toward the bottom of the closet are deep scratches in the
wallpaper, next to them is writing in faded pencil.
ANDREW
Holy shit, you saw that, right?

Right above the scratches. Here.
Andrew moves in closer and shines the camera light close to

Andrew hands the recorder to Joe. He takes it and holds it

She runs her flashlight across the markings on the wall. Rod
walks over to the closet and kneels down. He runs his
fingers over the ripped wallpaper.
ROD
Thats...unusual. Angela never

See if we can enhance them. Worse

Rod stands up and walks away from the closet.
Joe hands the tape recorder back to Andrew.
JOE
They were getting some good EVP
downstairs.
ROD
(to Andrew)
Alright, take some more, see if
theres any consistency.
(to Joe)
We should get back to the basement.
(to Group)
Joe and I got some weird...
readings, maybe some movement.
JESSIE
Movement? What kind?
JOE
A sheet fell off the table on its
own.
ANDREW
Thats pretty cool.
ROD
Could be nothing. Joe or I might
have stepped on the edge of it or
something.
JOE
We werent anywhere near it.
ROD
Lets wait for the tape, okay?
ANDREW
Shouldnt you be a little more

CHRIS
Giddy as a schoolgirl?
ROD
Over-enthusiastic over small signs.
Im going to wait for more proof.
You guys good up here?
MARY
Yes, definitely.
ROD
Good. Radio if you need us.
Rod and Joe leave the bedroom.
CHRIS
Im going to follow up on the EVP.
Can I get that, Andrew?
ANDREW
What?
(remembers the recorder)
Oh, right, sure-
Andrew takes out the recorder and hands it to Chris.
CHRIS
Thanks.
Chris leaves the room.
CAMERA 4: Rod walks down the stairs and heads through the
living room into the kitchen. Chris follows down the stairs
moments later, and heads for the living room table.
Mary heads back to the closet and resumes looking it over.
ANDREW
Why would Angela leave the bear in
there?
JESSIE
Maybe she didnt know it was here.

ANDREW
She told me that every time she

MARY
Entirely possible. Well have to
wait until we show her the results
to ask. We got some pictures, and
we can talk to her tomorrow about
it. Lets get back to work. Jessie,
more EVP?
JESSIE
You bet.
CAMERA 3: Rod walks down the stairs into the basement. He
walks over to where Joe is conducting his investigation.
They discuss something for a brief moment and continue the
investigation as usual.
Jessie takes a tape recorder out of her bag and starts
taping.
JESSIE
Is there anyone in here?
Silence.
JESSIE
If there is someone in here with
us, can you give us a sign?
Silence.
JESSIE
Were not here to hurt you, we just
want to know more about you.
Mary stands up and steps away from the closet. She turns on
her EMF reader and starts pacing around the room.
JESSIE
Again, can you give us a sign?
Silence.
JESSIE
Anything will do.
The closet door moves a little.

ANDREW
Oh my god yes.
They all have their backs to the bed. The bed sheets move
slightly, as if something is crossing over them. No one

JESSIE
It might just be the hinges. Let me
try...
Jessie shuts the door most of the way, then takes her hand
off it. They watch, but the door doesnt move.
Then Jessie pulls the door open again, and Andrew peers
inside. The teddy bear has shifted slightly, but no one
notices..
MARY

Andrew spins to see Mary fiddling with her flashlight. Its
beam fades, then dies.
ANDREW
Whats wrong?
MARY
I just charged it an hour ago.
She looks at it, hits it, and it comes back on.
ANDREW
Well thats ominous.
Mary and Jessie laugh.
ANDREW
Im going to check out the hallway.
MARY
Take this. Let us know if you get
anything on it.
Mary hands Andrew an EMF meter.
MARY
Do you know how to use it?

ANDREW
I can figure it out.
Andrew walks out the door and into the hallway. Save for the
light from his camera, its pitch black. He turns off the
light and switches the camera into night vision mode.
Everything takes on an eerie green glow - his camera uses a
different technology than the white glow of the
illuminators.
Andrew slowly walks down the hallway, keeping his footsteps
completely silent.
CAMERA 2: Jessie is about to close the closet door, then
notices the mark on the wall where the knob has dented it.
She calls Mary over to have a look and closes the closet
door.
Andrew continues down the hallway until a small SCRITCH
breaks the eerie silence.
Andrew stops walking. Silence.
Hes about to take another step when he hears the scratching
noise again, sounding as if its coming from the end of the
hall.
Andrew zooms the camera towards the end of the hallway. The
SCRATCHING - louder now - sounds again from the end of the
hallway.
He takes another step forwards and the sound stops -
suddenly the only noise is Andrews heavy breathing. He
zooms the camera back out and flips on the light so that he
can see the EMF meter.
The meter is lit up!
ANDREW
Oh shit.
Andrew starts backing up then spins on his heels, rushing
back into the bedroom. He walks into the room and turns off
night vision as he turns on the camera light.
Jessie and Mary look up as Andrew enters the room. Theyre
startled to seem him so obviously freaked out-

Jessie walks over to him.
JESSIE
What did you hear?
ANDREW
It just sounded like a scratching
noise. The EMF meter was going
crazy.
MARY
Jess, go with him to check it out,
Ill stay here.
Jessie looks at Andrew, who motions for her to lead.
ANDREW
Ladies first.
Jessie and Andrew walk out the door and into the pitch black
hallway, closing the door quietly behind them.
Jessie leads the way down to the bedroom in complete
silence, Andrew following close behind her.
Reaching the bedroom door, Jessie extends her hand and,
after hesitating for a second, slowly opens it.
The door creaks open, revealing: an old, bare queen-sized
bed with a large ornate headboard that takes up most of the
room. A small closet door in front of it is cracked open.
Jessie uses the flashlight to guide her way over to the
window and closes it.
She turns around and looks around the room, then pulls out
her recorder and starts taping.
JESSIE
Is there anyone in here with us?
Silence, except for the wind rattling the window slightly.
JESSIE
If someone is in here, can you give

Andrew aims the camera light down at the his EMF reader. The
needle is dancing around the high end of the scale.

JESSIE

dont mean to hurt you.
Andrew walks over to the closet and quietly opens the door.
He notices a string hanging from a lightbulb and reaches up
to pull it.
Light fills the closet, then Andrew looks down to film it
all. On the floor are empty bowls and plates. Dried vomit
sits in one corner.
ANDREW
Jesus. Jessie, come look at this.
Jessie walks over to Andrew and peers inside the closet. She
takes a step back and pulls out her walkie talkie.
JESSIE
Hey Mary, come down the hall to the
other bedroom. You need to see
this.
Andrew zooms in on the vomit.
CAMERA 2: Mary leaves the other bedroom and makes her way
down the hall.
Andrew steps back from the closet, still keeping it and
Jessie in frame.
ANDREW
How the Hell did Angela not know
about this? Who doesnt walk
through a house before sending
paranormal investigators into it?
MARY (O.S.)
Hey guys.
Andrew spins, startled to find Mary in the room behind him.
JESSIE
Mary, check this out.
She holds up the EMF reader, which is suddenly dead, only

ANDREW
Yup.
MARY
Well, thats something.
JESSIE
Okay, look over here, though-
Mary walks to the closet and looks inside.
ANDREW
Have you ever seen anything like
that?
Mary hesitates for a second.
MARY
No, I mean - weve been to crime
scenes...
JESSIE
After the fact, though. Usually
years later.
MARY
This place has been empty for
years. At least thats what Angela
told me.
ANDREW
So this isnt normal?
JESSIE
Decidedly abnormal.
Jessie looks to Mary, looking for direction.

looks back at the closet, worried.
JESSIE
Lets go.
Jessie and Andrew head out into the hallway, and then move
to the staircase.
CAMERA 4: Chris stops working with the recorder and looks up
as Mary comes down the stairs. He starts talking to her
while shes still on the way down.
Andrew follows Jessie down the stairs. Mary and Chris can
now be heard.
CHRIS

Listen to this.
Chris plays the tape. Andrew rushes over to get close to the
tape. There are weird SCRITCHES on the recording, along with
barely-audible CRYING.
CAMERA 3: Rod says something to Joe, then heads up the
stairs quickly.
MARY
Why is it so scratchy? Were you
touching the microphone?
CHRIS
Nowhere near it.
She leans in and listens to the SCRATCHES.
MARY

Rod cuts her off as he walks into the room.

ROD

ROD
What do you mean?
JESSIE
The scratches and bear are bad
enough - we just found a closet
that looks like someone was living
in it.
ANDREW
Or locked in it.
MARY
I cant imagine she didnt know
about any of this-
ROD
Hold on, dont jump to any
conclusions. With the readings

I think its safe to say
somethings happening. And thats
good! This is why were here. You

Chris looks over at him like hes an idiot.
Andrew runs to the stairs and aims the camera up at the dark

That wasnt upstairs... is there an
attic?
Mary and Jessie walk over to the base of the stairs as well.
Rod takes out his walkie.
ROD
Joe, come up here. We heard
something in the attic.
CAMERA 3: Joe takes out his walkie and talks into it.
JOE (WALKIE)
Just a second.
CAMERA 3: He finishes making a note of a reading in a
notepad, then heads up the stairs.
Rod starts up the staircase.
ROD
Im going to go check it out.
MARY
What? What are you going to do?
What if someone is up there?
Rod shakes his head.
ROD
Theres nobody up there.
CHRIS
Maybe its a raccoon.

Weve heard stuff like this before.
The only thing Im sure of is that
there are no people in the attic.

ROD
Stay right behind me. The rest of

Joe emerges from the basement and walks to where everyone is
standing.
JOE
Did Rod tell you about the
readings? Youve got to see-

We heard something upstairs. Sounds
like it came from the attic.
JOE

JESSIE
Like something was knocked over.
MARY
Rod and Andrew are going to check
it out.
JOE
Do you want me to go with you?
ROD
Andrew and I will be fine. Were

Rod stops and turns around.
ANDREW

Rod turns back and they continue upstairs in silence. They

hallway.
CAMERA 4: Everyone else mills around the living room,
checking their EMF readers, listening to Chriss EVP, and
talking to each other.
Rod stops halfway down the hall and reaches for the attics
pull-cord.
ROD
Back up.
Andrew takes a couple of steps back and looks up. He watches
Rod pull the door down - the ladder slides down too fast -
narrowly missing Rods head.
The ladders feet SMACK into the floor, throwing dust and
cobwebs everywhere.
ROD
Shit.
The sound of footsteps can be heard running up the staircase
- Mary appears at the top of it. She raises her flashlight
and points it right in Rods eyes.
MARY
Are you okay?
Rod raises a hand to block her flashlight beam.
ROD
Fine - the ladder just slipped.

Okay - but be careful.

ROD
Alright. Stay right behind me. And
dont leave the top rung of the
ladder.
ANDREW
Okay.
Rod begins to ascend the ladder, Andrew follows a few rungs
behind him. Rod stops at the top, moving the flashlight
around. Andrew cant see anything but Rods back.
ROD
I dont see anyone in here. Like I
said, probably nothing.
He steps off the top rung of the ladder and enters the
attic.
Andrew climbs the last few stairs up and finally gets a look
around the ATTIC with his camera.
The attic is large and dark, with the only light coming from
Andrews camera and Rods flashlight. A small window reveals
a wall of white from the heavy falling snow. Rod slowly
walks around the room, surveying his surroundings.
ROD
Is there anyone in here?
He listens in silence for a moment, then looks back at
Andrew.
Rod takes out his digital recorder and starts taping.

A CLATTER behind them breaks the silence. Rod spins and aims
his flashlight into the corner of the attic.
ROD
Hello? Is there someone in here?
He slowly starts to walk over to the corner. Andrew watches
him move.
Rod gets there and inspects the area, finding nothing out of
the ordinary except for a tipped over bucket and broom.
ROD
Did you do this to contact us? Can
you give us another sign?
The sound of snow and wind swirling outside fills the air.
CAMERA 2: The closet door in the bedroom swings open.
ROD
Any sign will do. Please, let us

Rod, I see something in the other
corner, over there.
He shakes his light in the direction. Rod looks over, then
starts walking to the corner, flashlight leading the way.
A small raccoon emerges, and scurries along the baseboard to
the opposite side of the attic.
ROD
Ill be damned, Chris was right,
its just a raccoon.
Rod pulls out his walkie talkie.
ROD
Were coming back down. It was just
a raccoon.
He puts away his walkie talkie and looks at Andrew.
ROD
Alright, lets go.
Rod starts to walk toward the trapdoor as Andrew takes a
step down. A low GROWLING can faintly be heard coming from
the attic. Andrew steps back up and peers back in.
ANDREW
Did you hear that?

Rod stops and turns around, facing Andrew.
ROD
Yeah, thats a good-
Rod takes one step forward, his foot slipping-
ROD
Shit!
He topples backwards and CRASHES through the floorboards.
ANDREW

he lands both the closet and bedroom doors slam shut!
MARY (O.S.)

CAMERA 4: Everyone in the living room rushes upstairs at the
sound of the crash - and Marys scream.
Andrew scrambles down the stairs - his foot misses a rung

As it IMPACTS, Camera 1 goes DEAD. That quadrant of the

Of course. Keep us updated.

Jessie closes the door then turns to Andrew.
JESSIE
What did you hear in the attic?
ANDREW
I dont really know. Sounded like a

ANDREW
Just a low rumbling noise, I cant

Joe comes running back into the house, shivering. He shuts

JOE
Well, not much we can do about the

Then he slipped?

JOE
And youre sure he slipped. He

ANDREW
Itll be right at the end.
Joe flips ahead in the video - the screen shows footage of
Camera 1 from earlier in the film.
Theres a sound from the area of the kitchen. Andrew walks

CAMERA 4: Joe continues working at the computer.
Andrew looks around the kitchen but sees nothing.
He walks back over to the living room and looks down the

around. Theres nothing moving down there either.
JOE (O.S.)
Andrew, look at this.
Andrew hurries back to the living room and looks at the
laptop. Its paused at the moment just before Rod falls
through the floor.
JOE
This is about three seconds before
Rod falls.
Joe plays the footage in slo-motion, then stops it just as
Rod is pitching backwards.
JOE
There! You see that?

JOE
Well, look at the angle of your
light and his flashlight. Look at
the other shadows. This is darker,

Joe laughs to himself.
JOE
Isnt this amazing?!
ANDREW
I was going to say seriously
spooky shit, but yeah, amazing

Joe looks up at Andrew and grins.
JOE
Congratulations. Your first
paranormal investigation has been

Joe lets out a little laugh. He closes the laptop screen and

Joe walks down the basement stairs, shutting the door behind

Andrew walks back into the living room and puts the camera

Andrew lets out a long sigh as the camera points at the

his own face.
CAMERA 4: As he speaks, the camera tracks to the top of the

Andrew.
ANDREW
This has been without a doubt the

Oh shit...
Andrew walks over to the back door and looks it up and down.
He turns around.
CAMERA 4: While Andrew is out of the room the camera pans
back from the kitchen to the middle of the room, then stays
absolutely still.
ANDREW
Can you give me another sign?
Silence. Andrew walks into the living room and looks around.
He sees the camera pointed ahead.
ANDREW
Why arent you looking at me?
Andrew waves his arms. The camera doesnt move to track him.

ANDREW
Hello? Over here?
Andrew walks towards the camera. When hes a few feet away
it suddenly it turns to face him. Andrew stops dead in his
tracks.
He spins around - theres nothing behind him. Then he turns
back and looks at the camera - which still stares at him.
CAMERA 4: The camera starts moving again, following
something up the stairs.
Andrew watches the camera move without any target, then
slowly takes the walkie out of his pocket. He moves to speak
into it, then stops when he hears a BANG from somewhere
upstairs.
ANDREW
What the fuck!
CAMERA 2: The BANG shakes the window frame HARD. Even the
camera vibrates a little.
Andrew walks over to the staircase, then pauses at the
bottom of it.
CAMERA 2: Jessie runs back into the bedroom - doesnt notice
the open closet door. She heads straight for the window and
looks through it. Then she takes out her walkie.
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Andrew, did you hear that?
Andrew jumps at the sudden sound, then he presses the send
button.
ANDREW
Jesus, you scared the crap out of
me!
JESSIE (WALKIE)
It sounded like it came from
outside.
ANDREW
Which side of the house?
JESSIE (WALKIE)
Around back.

ANDREW
Okay, Ill go check.
JESSIE
Be careful.
Andrew walks to the back door and opens it - hes buffeted
by the rush of cold air. He pulls his hoodie up and steps
outside-
EXT. THE HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Andrew looks up at the side of the house, then across the
yard.
Theres a large tree at the back of the yard, but nothing
close enough to touch the rear of the house.
Andrew walks a little farther out and looks up - hes able
to see Jessie silhouetted in the window. Andrew waves to
her, and she waves back.
All the lights in the house go out just as Jessie is
violently pulled away from the window.
A moment later theres a loud SLAM from inside the house,
followed quickly by Jessie SCREAMING.
Andrew runs back into the house.
CAMERA 3: The illuminator kicks in, and reveals Joe standing
rail-straight in the corner, facing the wall. Slowly he
takes out his flashlight, then hurries up the stairs.
CAMERA 2: The illuminator kicks in, and Jessie is seen
quickly kicking herself - or at something - into the corner.
The bedroom door is closed.
INT. THE HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Andrew runs through the kitchen and living room as fast as
he can, his way lit by the light on his camera.
CAMERA 4: It tracks Andrew as he runs through the house and
arriving at the stairs.
As Andrew gets to the stairs-

ANDREW
Hurry up!
Andrew turns and races up the stairs, with Joe close behind.
They run down the hallway into the back bedroom, pushing the
door open.
ANDREW
Jessie?
JOE
Where are you?
They move into the room - the closet door still open. Andrew
finds Jessie sitting next to the bed, curled up with her
arms around her knees.
ANDREW
Shes over here!
Joe rushes over to check on Jessie.
JOE
What happened!?
JESSIE
It hit me!
ANDREW
Who hit you?
JESSIE
I dont know!
JOE
What do you mean? What happened?!
Jessie tries to slow her breathing enough to speak clearly.
JESSIE
I was... I was looking out the
window and the lights went out. I
heard a slam and the next thing I
know Im flying across the bed.
Slammed into the floor, I- Ah
Christ, my head...
Andrew focuses on her hairline, where blood has matted her
light hair.

JOE
Are you sure you didnt trip when
the lights went out?
Jessie climbs to her feet with Joes help.
JESSIE
I know the difference! And who
slammed the door?! Somebody was in
here!
JOE
See, I get that, but the thing is,
if someone slammed the door before
they hit you, theyd still have to
be in here.
Jessies eyes go wide at the idea.
Andrew spins and looks around the room, checking every
corner, then looking in the closet. The bear is now in the
middle of the closet.
He spins back to the middle of the room and looks at Joe and
Jessie.
ANDREW
Were clear...
Andrew looks down at the bed.
ANDREW
Except...
Joe and Jessie see where Andrews looking, then quickly back
away from the bed. Andrew slowly crouches to the floor and
shines the cameras light under the bed.
JESSIE
Well?
ANDREW
Nothing but dust.
He climbs back to his feet.
JESSIE
I swear to God someone was in this
room with me. Joe?

ANDREW
Maybe its a ghost. I saw the
camera downstairs moving just

JESSIE
Something is in here, and it
clearly wants us gone.
All three look to each other.
JOE
Okay, lets calm down. Lets go
downstairs, find the fusebox, get
the lights on, and pack up our
gear.
JESSIE
Finally.
Joe, then Jessie, head out the door into the hallway, their
flashlights leading the way.
Andrew scans the room one last time. Now he fixates on the
bear on the floor of the closet. Its almost like the
hanging eye is looking at him.
ANDREW
Oh, fuck you, bear.
Andrew slams the closet door then rushes out of the room.
CAMERA 4: Joe and Jessie walk carefully down the stairs,
tracked by the camera. Andrew catches up with them on the
staircase.
The three hurry through the living room, with Joe leading
the way.
When they get to the kitchen, Joe shines his flashlight
along the walls. He finds the fuse box in the corner closest
to the basement door.
JOE
Got it.
As Joe goes to work on the fusebox, Andrew heads back into
the living room. He peeks through the window in the front
door.
He turns and walks back to the kitchen where Joe and Jessie
investigate the fusebox.

Joe flips the last breaker. Nothing happens.
JOE
Not the breaker. The storm must
have knocked the power out.
JESSIE
Joe, give me the keys so I can go
warm the car up. I dont want to
spend another minute in this house
if I dont have to.
Joe reaches into his pockets, but doesnt find the keys. He
pats himself down, growing increasingly panicked.
JOE
Oh, fuck, Chris never gave them
back before he left.
JESSIE
Are you kidding me?
JOE
Dont worry, Ill call him. Hell
come and get us.
Joe takes out his phone and dials. The phone goes straight
to the message.
JOE
Its going straight to voicemail.
JESSIE
Theyre probably in the emergency
room by now.
JOE
Right, um-

Chris, its Joe. Im still at the

JOE

JESSIE
Fuck! I want to get out of here!
JOE
Calm down. Ill try Eric on his
walkie.
JESSIE
Hes like twenty miles away!
JOE
Do you have a better idea?
Joe takes out his walkie and turns it on.
JOE
Eric, come in, its Joe.
No response.
JOE
Eric, come in. We need a ride.
Weve lost power and Chris took all
the keys when he left.
Silence.
JOE
Eric, Jessies hurt and were all
freaking out. We need to you to

JOE
Eric? Eric, come in. Fuck!
The walkie gives off some faint static. Faded into the

instinctively, the walkie bounces off the floor.
JOE
Jesus!
A low growl starts to fill the room, but fades away as
quickly as it arrived. They spin around, looking for its
source.
ANDREW
What the fuck is that?
JESSIE
Joe, I want to leave, and I want to
leave now.
JOE
Were not going anywhere in this
snow storm. The nearest house is a
mile away, and its ten below
outside.
ANDREW
Lets call the police.
JOE
And what would we tell them?
JESSIE
A lie! I dont care, lets just get
them here!
Joe looks at Jessies head.
JOE
Ill call an ambulance.
JESSIE
Fine, I dont care as long as they
come.
Joe dials 911 and puts the phone up to his head.
JOE
Yes, I need an ambulance...
As Joe calls for help. Andrew wanders into the back of the
living room. Jessie joins him, looking exhausted and freaked

Jessie looks around.
JESSIE
Id rather take my chances with the
cold.
CAMERA 2: The closet door opens.
Joe walks up to them, shutting off his phone.
JESSIE
Well?
JOE
Theyll be here in less than an
hour.
JESSIE
An hour?!
JOE
Apparently theyre dealing with a
larger-than-average number of
accidents.
ANDREW
Whos out driving in this?
Jessies eyes go wide as she notices-

Andrew, are you getting this?
ANDREW

Andrew follows the movement of the camera with his own,
everyone staring in stunned silence, following the camera
with their eyes.
It travels down the stairs and across the living room in one
fluid movement. The camera loses the signal by the kitchens
corner. It resets to a neutral position.
JOE
I cant believe its working. This
is the evidence we need!
CAMERA 3: The camera falls over, landing hard on its side -
but continuing to film the basement using the illuminator.
Everyone turns to look at the basement.
JESSIE
Oh shit. Its downstairs.
JOE
Weve got to check it out-
ANDREW
No - Chris couldnt get the camera
to stand up. It probably just fell.
JESSIE
Oh Christ. Guys, we need to leave.
Rod got hurt, I got hurt - what
else do you need?
JOE
I agree completely, but seeing as I
dont want to freeze to death,
were stuck here for an hour. And
if we can use that hour to document
the best evidence in human history

Exactly right.
Andrew and Joe head for the stairs.
JESSIE
Dont leave me alone up here!
JOE
Come with us, then.
JESSIE
No way.
JOE
Stay right here. If anything
happens, yell. Well be right back.
JESSIE
Better believe Ill yell.
Joe nods to Andrew.
JOE
Alright, lets go.
Andrew looks over at Jessie, who glares back, then sits on
the couch. Joe leads the way down the stairs into the
basement, followed by Andrew.

ANDREW
Like I said, it probably fell
again.
JOE
Here, keep your light on the
camera.
He walks over to the camera, bends down, and picks it back
up. Andrew walks behind him to provide additional light.
JOE
Its still running.
Joe reaches into his pocket, but cant find something. He
turns to Andrew.
JOE
Have you got a voice recorder?
ANDREW
Um... Yeah.
Andrew takes it out and gives it to Joe.
ANDREW
Shouldnt we go back upstairs now?
JOE
No. Be quiet.
Joe starts recording the ambient sound.
JOE
Is there anyone in here with us?

we not welcome here? Do you want us

final question, a voice, nothing more than a whisper,
pierces through the static.
VOICE (RECORDER)
...in the closet.
ANDREW
Did you hear that?
Joe rewinds and turns up the volume. This time the voice is
clearer and more words can be made out.
VOICE (RECORDER)
...get in the closet.
Joe turns around and notices something behind Andrew. Andrew
turns around to see the closet door opening on its own.
Joe walks over to the closet and shines his flashlight
inside. He grabs the knob, then opens it and closes it a few
times, testing the hinges.
JOE
That wasnt an accident.
He looks over to Andrew.
JOE
Andrew, come here, bring the
camera.
Andrew walks over and shines the camera into the closet. The
closet is smaller than the one in the upstairs bedroom, and
has metal shelving for storage.
Its bare, the walls and floor concrete. Andrew looks down.
He sees something, then crouches to get a better look.
Sitting on the ground is a small tooth, most likely
belonging to a child. Andrew zooms in and notices a
fingernail embedded in the wall.
ANDREW
Oh fuck...
Joe stands up and turns around. He starts the recorder.

ANDREW
Look...
The camera falls to the ground with a crash.
CAMERA 4: Jessie hears the sound and gets off the couch. She
slowly walks towards the basement, then stops when shes
halfway there - staring at the doorway, but unable to get
any closer.
JOE
We dont want to cause you any
harm. Can you give us another sign
that you acknowledge this?
Silence.
ANDREW
Here, take the camera.
Andrew hands the camera to Joe. He aims it into the closet
and continues speaking.
CAMERA 3: Andrew crouches next to the camera and rights it,
then tries to stabilize the tripod.
JOE
Can you please give us another
sign? What happened in the closet?
Why did you direct us there?
CAMERA 3: As Andrew checks the camera to make sure its
working, the lens is aimed at a necklace he wears, a small
hemp choker. It starts to move slowly - lifting up to his
throat then dragging him back and CHOKING HIM!
Joe spins and sees Andrew on the ground.

JOE
Fuck!
Joe struggles with Andrew for a few seconds, then manages to
tear off the necklace and toss it across the room.
Andrew gasps for breath, then picks up the camera and lets
Joe help him stand.
CAMERA 4: The camera suddenly moves over to the kitchen edge
where the basement door is. The sound of the moving camera
(mute to us) shocks Jessie into action - she runs into a
corner by the front door, crouches in a ball, and remains
still.
Joe runs up the stairs, with Andrew close behind him. Andrew
quickly stops, then runs back and grabs the camera.
When they arrive in the living room they see Jessie in the
corner. Joe runs over to her, Andrew stays in the middle of
the room.
JOE
Alright, you were right Jessie,
were getting out of here right
now.
Jessie slowly points toward the camera, which is moving
slowly up the stairs. Joe watches the camera. Andrew looks
from it to the staircase.
ANDREW
What the fuck is this? Whats going

Camera 4 stops moving up and starts to move back down.
ANDREW
Were leaving!
Camera 4 reaches the bottom of the stairs and swings towards
the center of the room. Joe slowly walks over to Andrew.
JOE

it go, then walks behind the path, heading slowly up the
stairs.
Andrew moves over to Jesse.
ANDREW
Can you move?
Jessie looks up. She nods slightly then stands up. Andrew
bends down to help her up. He glances back at Joe, whos
halfway up the stairs.
ANDREW
Jesus, Joe, what are you doing?
JOE
Call Eric again. I need to check
this out.
ANDREW
What? You were downstairs, you saw
what that thing did to me! Forget
it, lets go!
Joe looks back down from the top of the stairs.
JOE

JESSIE
No! Lets just go!
JOE

Andrew puts the phone away and walks to the bottom of the

CAMERA 2: Joe turns his head, hearing his name called.
ANDREW

CAMERA 2: Joe hesitates, then walks back towards the door.
As he passes the closet hes suddenly PULLED BACK INTO IT by
something unseen, and the door SLAMS SHUT.
Hearing the SLAM from upstairs, Andrew starts up the stairs,
taking out his walkie.

howling wind outside. Andrew reaches the door and slowly

Andrew looks out the window then heads for the closet. He

Andrew drops the camera and it falls behind him, catching a

Suddenly, his feet start flailing about as he is slowly
